    Windows will not start up

Computer was functioning well this morning and user was watching a movie, a screen came up that windows detected a problem and it shut down and was unable to start up again.

Now it will power up and give an option to start normally, or to start by repairing. Either way, it freezes at the point where the windows icon comes up.
I have tried to start it up after unplugging it from the power source. This is a Toshiba Satellite c650 laptop using Intel
    What's next?

Can you boot up in safe mode?

well, when the power comes on it has two options repair(recommended) to which a progress bar appears and then moves to a blank grey screen where it stays, second option is to start normally to which the windows icon appears and then the screen goes blank except for a fully functioning mouse pointer

Sorry, but are you tapping F8 when first powered up and it takes you to that point?

after you see the mouse pointer, you may not be waiting long enough. i would give it at least a half hour.
if that doesnt work, and you have your win7 installation disc, you might try this:

I have tried to boot in safe mode but it makes no difference. I also have waited over a half an hour after seeing the mouse pointer..to no avail.

There was no Windows 7 installation CD with the computer.
