    Windows 7 Freezes Up

    Hi there,
I have a HP DV6t Laptop. It came with windows 7 home premium and it was all going smooth until it started freezing up. I consulted the HP customer service and their best solution is to do a factory default. I have done that twice and it did not solve my problem. I have ran memtest86+ for 7 hours and it came clean. I ran sfc/ scannow and came clean too. Ran the harddisk test both short and long which came clean too. I gave up on that and decided to do a clean reinstallation of windows 7 professional. I did this because I installed it on my desktop and it never froze before. Sadly, that has not been the case for my laptop. My laptop is freezing randomly. It could be anytime between couple of minutes to 3 days the most of starting up my computer. There are no useful logs in Event Viewer except bad shut down due to me doing hard reboot. It could freeze anytime regardless of it being idle, simple word processor or games. I have had 2 types of freeze, one it would just freeze and not respond at all or it would freeze and the sound would be stuck in a loop. I have also tried installed Microsoft Hotfix for these freezing issue, but did not had any luck on it. I dont send my computer to sleep or hibernate.

    My specs are :
    I7 -720QM
    6GB Ram
    Nvidia GT320M - 1GB
    300GB harddisk

I read somewhere that this problem could be caused by incorrect voltages to the RAM. But HP has locked up the BIOS, so I cant change that. Although I did try running CPU-Z and HWMonitor which came back to be at a consistent voltage.

Let me know if you need a full list of the specs.

    Thanks

    Welcome

Here are my solutions to freezing, and an excellent article, which I hope is of some help
Go to search type device manager and look for any yellow warning markers
Download and run malwarebytes, a full scan after you update
    Run antivirus scan
    Check memory with memtest86
Make sure that you are not over heating.
Try in safe mode; report back if it works properly.
    Try a clean boot
Make sure PSU is working properly
    If overclocking, restore to original
Test hard drive at company website.
Test in safe mode, does it still happen?
    Try with clean boot..

There are no yellow tabs in my device manager. I updated all my drivers to the latest ones when I reinstalled Windows 7 Pro 3 days ago. I ran both antivirus and MalwareBytes scan as I spoke to the HP customer service. Both came clean too. As i mentioned in my 1st post, I ran a 7 hour memtest which was clean and had no error. I will start tracking the temperature of my computer after this. I did not overclock my CPU at all. So, that leaves me with 3 things, safe boot, clean boot and test my harddrive at manufacture website. i am not sure how long will it take for it to have any freezing issue on safe boot/clean boot. Besides, I am student and I consistently take my laptop to school with me. So, it is pretty difficult for me to run it under safeboot or clean boot during the weekdays. The suitable time would be over the weekend.

Btw, how do i check if my PSU is working properly? Again, my battery is connected to my laptop when it crashed 2 hours ago and it had charge in it. So, do you think we could eliminate PSU problem this way?

    Thanks

You can test a power supply yourself using a multimeter or you can purchase a power supply tester.
Under the circumstances, lets put this portion on hold. With your schedule, it is best to test the most likely candidates first. Overheating is a big potential candidate

Okay. I will install the temperature measurement software. I just want to mention that this laptop is only about 2 months old. Not saying that there is no overheating problem, just that i might have not noticed it to be as hot as my previous laptop.

I have been trying to apply a hotfix from Microsoft but I am getting an error saying "The update is not applicable to my computer". What can I do about it?
