Windows failed to load, problem may be AVG?

My computer fails to load windows and keeps restarting at the point of the windows load screen.

When I started my computer, I got a pop-up saying AVG needed to restart the computer for an update. After the restart, the Windows Repair screen came up saying windows failed to load. Startup Repair tried to automatically fix the problem, which was taking a while, so I turn on my laptop. I saw the same AVG update pop up, and I wasn't yet suspicious of it so I restart my laptop as well. Unfortunately the same thing appears on the laptop.

The auto repair worked on the laptop but it failed on the desktop. Now the desktop acts as I've described above: it restarts every time it gets to the Windows loading screen. Running in safe mode does nothing. Trying a system restore (to yesterday, when it was working fine) does nothing. When the laptop restarted to normal, I got the AVG update window again, which I'm ignoring for now.

Both computers run Win7 Home Premium x64.

My mother just called me with this same issue on Vista x64. After updating AVG it crashes and is stuck in a reboot cycle.

Good one AVG, now I have to go over there and fix her computer... This is not what I planned on doing this weekend :/

I'm pretty sure it's an AVG problem. Have two laptops running, one vista x32, the other windows 7 ultimate x64, both running AVG 2011 and both with same error. I have a ticket sent to AVG, but don't think will get a response for a few days....just have that gut feeling. If i get an answer soon, i'll post here. Temp solution: don't shut down or restart computer....

My Lenovo X201T laptop just had a failure to start after AVG update, just like reported above. Restored, and it happened again, so I will have to restore and immediately turn off AVG update, until AVG gets back to me with an answer.

No, when restored to previous restore point (11/26/2010 in my case) windows starts normally, but AVG will re-update, and if I restart after that update, windows will not restart.

Ran the uninstall link you suggestged and the Windows 7 machine crashed. Trying to repair - restore. Ran the uninstall (for the 32bit vista machine), but AVG still here. Machine up and running but still has the AVG need to restart popup.

I am absolutely furious. It is DEFINITELY the last AVG.

First my desktop, then, immediately after, my Sony laptop. Crashed within 5 minutes of eachother, after restarting after the most recent update.

Right now I fear I may have lost my data on my laptop - several days worth since I last backed up. I am freaking out.

Who's up for a class action lawsuit?

Hi and welcome to the forum. Uninstall AVG using this removal tool: Tool (64 bit). If you have Identity Protection installed, remove it using this tool: Tool. AVG is a known cause of crashes and problems on some Win 7 systems. Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials in its place. Make sure Windows Firewall is turned on. See if your system runs better. Let us know.

The avgremoverx64.exe did not remove AVG. Oddly though, after the restart, it did not crash, meaning AVG did not update during that restart. Would it be safe to remove AVG via control panel -> uninstall a program?
