Windows 7: BSOD - possibly ntoskrnl? - some advice please..

one thing I should have mentioned - perhaps if it helps, is that occasionally the BSOD only fills 50% of the screen in the middle - i.e black surround and BSOD in the middle in a smaller size.

Thanks

Goose, you have done a really good job with the drivers. I only find one slightly out of date driver and it is the latest driver available and a Vista driver. You can try renaming it to .old or .bak.and see if it is the cause. After you rename it, if you get another BSOD, go ahead rename it back to .sys.
Quote:
PxHlpa64.sys Tue Jun 23 19:16:35 2009 - Sonic CD/DVD driver (used by many different CD/DVD programs) pxHelp20.sys programs
Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers and rename PxHlpa64.sys to PxHlpa64.BAK
This will break your CD/DVD program, but can easily be renamed after we've finished.
The dump indicates your USB system was involved in the crash. What USB devices do you have plugged in? I think you have AnyDVD by Slysoft installed? Try uninstalling it or renaming this driver, ftusbrdload.sys Tue Apr 13 10:40:06 2010. This driver is up to date; but this software has caused a few problems for others. Again, if eliminating this program or renaming the driver does not solve the problem, you can reinstall it or rename the driver again.

This crash occurred with only 2 minutes of uptime. This coupled with the fact that you got a BSOD with a clean boot makes a hardware problem a good possibility.

Error code A, IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. Usual causes: Kernel mode driver, System Service, BIOS, Windows, Virus scanner, Backup tool, compatibility.
Here is something that I do not recommend often or lightly. Check you BIOS version and see how old it is. See if there are BIOS upgrades available and read what problems the latest versions fix and what changes they make. Consider flashing your BIOS. DO NOT FLASH IT THOUGH WINDOWS! If you were to BSOD while flashing the BIOS, you would turn your computer into a big paper weight. Your CPU manufacturer will have instructions for downloading and flashing the BIOS. Follow these instructions to the letter. There is risk involved with the flashing the BIOS.

Try another clean boot with just basic services loading, nothing extra. Do you have any kind of a third party security program running? Don't count Malwarebytes. Any kind of a hot spot security program? A file security program? If so, please uninstall it.

I also suggest that you run Prime 95 to test your CPU and your RAM. Follow the instructions in this tutorial: https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...t-prime95.html. Run 3 separate tests, one on each of the settings (Blend, Small FFTs, Large FFTs). Post your results.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (a)
An attempt was made to access a pageable (or completely invalid) address at an
interrupt request level (IRQL) that is too high. This is usually
caused by drivers using improper addresses.
If a kernel debugger is available get the stack backtrace.
Arguments:
Arg1: 0000000000000000, memory referenced
Arg2: 0000000000000002, IRQL
Arg3: 0000000000000000, bitfield :
    bit 0 : value 0 = read operation, 1 = write operation
bit 3 : value 0 = not an execute operation, 1 = execute operation (only on chips which support this level of status)
Arg4: fffff80002ca82b3, address which referenced memory

That's great, thanks for some more suggestions.

The USB device I think was a usb hard drive - which as it happens wasn't recognised, but nothing else has been plugged in.

I updated the BIOS on the laptop a few weeks ago so am at the most recent version - it has run fine since then - up until now of course, might it be worth 'rolling back' to the previous version?

I will give prime95 a go - how/where are the results displayed - just ran a v quick test to see how it worked but couldnt see if the results were outputted to a file of some sort?

I believe it creates a log. It has been so long since I ran it, I forgot. Don't roll back the BIOS yet.

I think I may be getting somewhere, I spent a few hours starting services in groups and then rebooting and have identified a number of services that when left on caused the machine to Blue screen, whthout them I was able to boot with no problems.

Will check again when I get home from work and confirm the list!

On the prime95 front, I ran the tests for a few hours and all seemed ok - no crashes and all said passed. Couldn't find any report though, unless I ran a benchmarking test which resulted in a results.txt file.

So I thoughht it was going well......

And then it started happening again, randomly. I then put a spare hard drive i had in, re-installed and updated drivers to see if I could narrow down to a hardware or software problem. Have not had a blue screen after 24 hours of new Hard drive, although I am having a severely under performing graphics card. I ran some tests on it and the ratings were well below what I expected them to be - compared to what I usually get.

I removed the drivers with driver sweeper, downloaded from ATI and re-installed and still no improvement - 3D mark 06 was giving me a score of about 2000 compared to similar systems - same CPU, video and Ram and they all got about 7000?

So old (BSOD) hard drive back in and I removed ATI software / drivers and re-installed and then more BSOD's - both safe mode and normal. Ive attached the most recent dump files if you could have another look and see what they hold!

My thought was to rebuild with a new Hard drive but if there 'might' be a hardware graphics issue it would be good to find out first.

Is there any decent way of testing the video card for stability - assuming I can get the drivers on and working as Im not convinced they are working properly - 3D marks results tell me something isnt quite right

thanks again for taking time to help!

Thanks for the detailed update. Run Furmark to test your graphics card. Follow the instructions in this tutorial: Video Card - Stress Test with Furmark. Be sure to monitor the temps while you test.

Did you try
uninstalling AnyDVD or renaming this driver, ftusbrdload.sys Tue Apr 13 10:40:06 2010? This driver is up to date; but this software has caused a few problems for others. All of your drivers look up to date.

All three of these dumps blame ntoskrnl and do not show us anything specifically. Try Memtest again from a cold boot after your computer has been off for a while. If you get no errors after at least seven passes. Enable Driver Verifier following these instructions: Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable. Driver Verifier will cause BSOD's when it finds a faulty driver. Upload any and all Driver Verifier triggered dumps. Use your computer normally while verifier is running.

Arg4: fffff80002cae2b3, address which referenced memory

Just wanted to give you an update, For the last few days I have been using the laptop with a new HD in and have decided to stay on that route - luckily I have a few spare laptop drives!

So for now I'm going to go with the new build - always nice to have a clean machine to play with!!

Thanks for your help, its really appreciated, i may come back to the old drive for some more troubleshooting when i get bitten by the "I really want to solve that issue" bug!!

Thanks again
