Windows 7: I am losing my mind!

I pray its something as simple as getting a better anti-virus package. I guess then I should ask if there is a concensus on what is a solid and free (if possible) anti-virus suite that windows 7 users have success with. Also thank you Golden and yowanvista for the quick replies, cause I have no idea when this thing is gonna crash on me.

Also I use free versions of Spybot S and D and Malware Bytes

I don't thing its AVG the cause, none of its drivers were involved in the crash

I agree, in general my problem doesn't really fit the profile of the problem discussed in the AVG thread. My issue has been happening anyway since september.

As the other guys pointed out, it appears not to be the anti-virus (unfortunately). On the question of which software to use, I see lots of good recommendations for MSE, and I would use that. MBAM is excellent, and you already have that, so you are well sorted.

First things first though....lets get the hardware issue sorted. Just be sure that there aren't temperature issues (as a consequence of hardware problems) that your fans can't manage, can you download and install Speccy? It lists all your hardware components, and also the temperatures they are running at.

But has the posted said the temperatures are normal, it more likely a hardware fault as I suggested earlier

I agree it is probably a hardware fault, but I thought it might be useful to look at the hardware temps since he mentions a previous GFX over-clock.

Here's the low-down on my temps.

ATI catalyst says right now the gfx card is running at 33 degrees celsius and a fan speed 21 percent of maximum (2020 rpm)

Speecy says the CPU is at 29 and the hard drive at 26 but didn't list temps for other components for some reason

AMD OverDrive dashboard shows a cpu temp for each core ranging from 28.6-29.4
It says the gpu is at 34, the CPU is at 30, and the mobo is at 23.

Asus PC probe 2 confirms a 30 degree cpu and 23 degree mobo temps

I can also say that both the cpu and gfx card under intense gaming are usually within three degrees of each other and sit somewhere in the mid 50s

All temps are perfectly normal, the mobo may be faulty

Ok so what peice of hardware should I test? I just replaced the PSU 2 days ago so thats not it. I had the RAM that originally had 936 errors replaced with a new set that works fine, though I haven't felt the need to test it in a few weeks cause I figure the odds of getting two consecutive bad sets of ram to be small, plus I tested it right after purchase and it was fine. I already tried an nVidia 8800 GT with correct drivers 2-3 weeks ago with no improvement. I don't have an extra hard drive lying around so I haven't tried that yet. I can't see how my disk drive is causing this. So that pretty much leaves the mobo. Should I just try a simpler one? This one that I have seems like a true enthusiasts mobo, chock full of all kinds of settings I have never seen or heard of.

I'll suggest RMA'ing the mobo
