    SFC freezes

My system has decided to crash and burn. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I can't install any programs, windows won't shut down and when I try to run SFC it freezes at 60% complete. I have not installed anything new for months. This started last week, prior to that the computer ran "fine".
I have been reading this forum. I have run chkdsk (no problems) and reinstalled windows, all to no avail. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Did you do a clean win 7 re-install (format HD?)

Does it also do the same thing in safe mode (F8)?

I did not do a clean install, I did an "upgrade" install.

This morning I tried your safe mode suggestion. I tried running sfc in safe mode and it returned that a repair was pending, please restart to complete. I restarted and tried 3 more times with the same results. I then started windows and ran sfc, it completed and returned that everything is peachy. So I went back and tried it under safe mode. It still returns that a repair is pending???

I have run chkdsk, sfc and the memory diagnostics; all returned that everything is working correctly. My computer will now install programs, but it still doesn't shut down. If you have any sugestions on the repair pending under safe mode, I would appreciate it.
    Thanks for you help.

    Hello!

SFC is *supposed* to be my speciality. Let us see what I can do! This error can actually be caused by chkdsk. I know this may sound odd, but it is true. Also, once it has come, it is very difficult to "flick the switch" and reset. Please don't touch anything at all, and give us reboots into Safe Mode > Shut down > Normal mode > Shut down > Safe Mode > Test

    I mean absolute immediate shutdown.

If that hasn't tripped it, and SFC still does not work, can you please remain in Safe Mode, and try SFC one last time. Then see if you have the file C:\Windows\WinSxS\pending.xml.

If you do, can you please copy and paste the contents of it between code tags in a new reply, or copy it to your Desktop and upload it.

    Thanks!

I followed your advise, part of the problem was I was not accurate in my previous post. I ran sfc successfully in safe mode and normal mode with no issues. Where I had the problem was going F8 - then selecting repair the computer - command prompt. That is where I got the repair pending message and still do. I searched for the pending file on my computer, but none existed. Therefore, I'm going to assume that the issue is "corrected".
I still have the shut down issue. The computer will shut down if you don't log into an account, but once you log in, it just spins forever. I have stripped out everything except the basic requirements from the startup menu. I suppose the on/off button works just fine.
Thanks for you help. I hope everybody has a happy holiday season.

The fix lasted 1 day. I'm back to being unable to complete the run of sfc in normal mode (60% complete), runs in safe mode, no issues!!!! I can't install any programs or run some of the programs I have already on the computer. This is ridiculous that the operating system doesn't operate. Any suggestions.
    Thanks.

    Hello!

When SFC fails to complete, we normally take the log. This can show us where it got stuck, and allow us to read around the error. For this, we need the complete, un-parsed log. Please copy C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log to your Desktop, right click on it > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, and then upload it here.

    Thanks!

Sadly, not much was revealed! No files were ever shown as corrupt in that log from SFC, which makes sense, and SFC ploughs/plows on, and suddenly stops. No errors, no read around, nothing. It just ends when it was closed. I know you did not receive the normal message, but still, I was kind of hoping for something. I will think over night!

Thanks for your help Richard. My machine is now running "correctly". I stopped everything that wasn't necessary to run windows from starting up and that seemed to fix the problem. My assumption is that something updated and caused a conflict. What, I haven’t a clue. And after wasting days trying to fix this problem, I’m not spending any more time trying to find out.
I hope you and your family have a happy and safe holiday season.
