Oh just to add this in; it worked fine for the first few days then It crashed at about 5am (yeah, assassins creed 2 is addictive xD) on the desktop. I went to bed just thinkin 'hell, only a crash.. It'll be fine in the morning' then from their it crashed on the welcome screen and if I got on it would crash soon after.
Thanks for your help btw.
Did you change out drivers given by the Win7 installer, then quickly updated via optional Windows Updates?
This is not XP or Vista. You don't have to import any drivers except those missing or in error in Device Manager after install, optional Windows updates, and enabling auto hardware driver updating here: Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware
Only if performance dictates doing so should you change out display, chipset or other drivers to those found on the Support downloads webpage for your computer or device model.
See if you have a restore point from before you changed out drivers and get back to see how performance holds up. If necessary go all the way back to before updates and programs were installed, or clean reinstall.
Then install your updates in small groups starting with optional Drivers to see how performance holds up after each group. Install programs one-by-one using the same method until you isolate the driver, update or program which is causing the hang.
At the same time I would be checking the logs and standard troubleshooting methods built into Win7 which are laid out here: Computer lags every couple seconds
If your VGA cable is pluged into the Nvidia card with the 2 DVI ports also, set the bios to choose the Nvidia card as the primary video source, NOT the onboard VGA port.
Ok I'm not the greatest computer whiz but the only thing I could find in BIOs was;
'init display first' set to 'PCI' The other option is PEG (EXpress graphics.) The description of it was ' set the fgirst initation of the monitor display from different type of vga card'
edit: tried changing it to peg but no difference.
