Windows 7: Bsod stop: 0x000000f4

10 Jan 2011   #21

Win 7 Pro x64

The system was running fine for a couple of days. But then it wouldn't shutdown properly again.
I had updated the NVidia graphics driver, the Intel Ethernet driver, and a program (ImgBurn) and plugged my computer via ethernet into my router to transfer some large video files to NAS. It was after this point that I noticed the familiar trouble.

I installed a restore point taken when all was well Thursday evening (01/06). I reinstalled the two drivers mentioned above. The system still won't shutdown or recognize when I put a USB device into a port. Again, at the office while plugged into the HP USB Docking Station all functions normally.

I ran Griff's diagnostics and a perfmon report, as well as a procexp report, and have attached them here. Would you please review for a suspicious culprit I may have missed.

I'm thinking that something in the HP Docking Station is causing the issue. I can always tell if the system will hang at shutdown by inserting a device into a USB port. If it's seen, all is well. If not, shutdown will hang. When I'm plugged into the office all is well. When I'm away, it is hit or miss. I also noticed that DisplayLinkService was listed as an "unresponsiveService" by xbootmgr. (When the system hangs at shutdown xbootmgr is unable to trace anything and reports "Shutdown action failed: No disk IOs found.")

I will uninstall the HP Docking Station (it runs DisplayLink drivers) and report what happens.

Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit

All three dumps are bugcheck 9F, DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE, and all three blame a Windows system core file, which is highly unlikely to be the cause. The only outdated drivers I see on your system are the Ricoh card reader drivers. Rename them.

Note   Note
Renaming drivers: create a restore point, using Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers, locate the driver files, and rename them from .sys to .old. Reboot and the drivers will not load. This will break whatever software or hardware these drivers are associated with.

After you rename these drivers, enable Driver Verifier carefully following the instructions in this tutorial: Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable. Upload any and all dumps created by Verifier. Use your computer normally while Verifier is running.

Win 7 Pro x64

No crashing yet from Driver Verifier. I'm trying though... :)

I analyzed the differences between xbootmgr shutdown traces performed at the office (while connected to HP USB Docking Station 2.0) and at home (not connected to the docking station). There were some differences:

2011-01-11 Differences between xbootmgr shutdown traces

In Ofc Shutdown but not Home

<sessionShutdown sessionID='1'...

The Outlook and Kies don't worry me because I had not loaded Outlook at home nor Kies while at the office. I'm curious about why WUDFHost wasn't running when the computer was not connected to the docking station.

I am not really familiar with wudfhost.exe as to what exactly it does. I know it is a Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework Host Process from Microsoft Corporation and part of the Windows OS. What does the Kies Tray Agent do?

I am still having the USB/shutdown issues at home.

HP advised me to update the docking station drivers which had no effect.

I then began a series of tests where I booted up adding or deleting one item at a time from the following list: AC power, USB mouse, VGA monitor, ethernet, wireless.
I would then insert a flash drive into the USB port and see if it recognized by the system, unmount the flash drive, put the system into hibernation, resume from hibernation, and finally shutdown.

I ran these tests at my office and then at home.

At the office everything worked in all configurations although I did experience a 0xf4 crash while connected via wireless and viewing a youtube video inside Firefox.

I then turned on Virtualization Technology and set Num Lock on at boot via the BIOS and restarted.

All tests succeeded while wireless at the office.

I packed up and drove home. A couple of hours later I booted the computer with only wireless (no ac power, usb mouse, external monitor) and the flash drive was recognized on insertion but it would not unmount. I tried hibernation and the screen went blank but the wireless LED remained lit and the hard drive activity LED flashed every 0.5 seconds. When I attempted to resume from hibernation the screen remained blank and the system was unresponsive. I had to use the power button to force shutdown.

In BIOS I turned off Virt Tech, HP QuickWeb, and HP QuickLook.

I rebooted with a USB mouse and wireless. The flash drive was recognized upon insertion. I uninstalled all USB drivers (to allow Windows to reload them on the next boot) and the system shutdown normally.

Upon reboot Windows reloaded the USB drivers from the existing files. The system recognized the flash drive but would not unmount. Shutdown required the power button.

The next morning I came into my office and booted up the system with no devices installed other than wireless. Everything works and the system shut down normally.

At the office I have a LinkSys WRT54G router and at home a Netgear WNDR3400. The computer and system are otherwise exactly the same. Could it be some weird wireless-g vs. wireless-n conflict?

My head hurts...

Interesting series of tests - and I can see why your head hurts. I am far from a connectivity expert. We have some gurus here here who are experts with connectivity. I suggest that you copy this post and use it to start a new thread in the Network & Sharing section, Network & Sharing - Windows 7 Forums. You will get some good help there - and I will learn, too! :)

It gets better, I can CONSISTENTLY repair or break the USB/Shutdown issue!

While at home (with wireless-n) if wireless is connected nothing works (USB will not unmount, cannot create restore points, no hibernation, shutdown won't complete).

However, if I change the wireless network key which breaks the network connection and reboot the system, upon reboot, everything works including normal shutdown.

I then restore the wireless network and nothing works. I break the network and everything works. It's as consistent as an On/Off switch.

In Safe Mode with Networking everything functions normally so this must be a driver issue of some kind.

I will begin a thread in Network & Sharing. Thank you for your assistance and kind attention in this matter.
