    Depending on the motherboard / BIOS combination these actually mean something, although most motherboards are using Award, Phoenix, or AMI BIOSes nowadays if it's not strictly an Intel-made board. Given those three BIOSes, 4 beeps indicate one of three things - a system timer error (bad CPU), bad RAM, or a PSU power issue. All are hardware errors though, so it might be good at this juncture to consider starting with a RAM test as it's the easiest to do and the most common hardware component to fail after the hard drive.

    The BIOS is actually written by HP (well, at least they're holding the copyrights).

    I performed the following tasks:
    * Ricoh Memory Card Reader rismcx64.sys and scfilter.sys ver 1.12 dated 07/20/2009 - Windows Update identifies as latest driver (obtained from HP today).
    * ASIX AX88772A USB2.0 to Fast Ethernet Adapter ax88772.sys and WdfCoInstaller01009.dll ver 3.14.3.5 dated 05/31/2010 updated by Windows Update today.
    * Uninstalled HpqKbFiltr.sys.
    * Uninstalled ZA
    * Cleared the prefetch of *.pf files
    * Installed MSE and Windows Firewall

    The system appears to be running clean and it also booted up a bit faster than with ZA.
    Another interesting thing happened: I could shut down the system normally. I've been having an ongoing issue with the computer where it will shut down normally at my office but not when I'm at home. The difference between home and office is at office I'm hooked up via wired ethernet through an HP USB Docking Station and at home I'm wireless with no docking station.
    The result is at home I cannot create a restore point, the system won't recognize when a USB device is plugged in or removed, and it won't shut down - it goes to the shutting down screen and stays there 10 minutes when it will ultimately self-reboot. I can press the power button and it will close. Upon reboot it notes that Windows did not shut down properly and I can hit normal load and it comes up fine. Again, it won't shut down properly but it doesn't seem to affect the operation of the system. I've gone round with HP Tech Support and they can only advise that a process won't shut down and is, therefore, preventing the system from finishing shutdown.
    Well, at the office I unplugged everything and my computer worked normally including recognizing USB devices (I was able to tether my laptop to my Samsung Captivate phone) and shutting down normally. I thought my system was finally going to run correctly. Unfortunately, now that I'm home it won't shut down, won't recognize USB devices. Sheesh!

    Any idea how I could figure out who is hanging at shutdown that I may then KILL it?

    Thanks for the help. Sometimes I miss the old DOS days...

    P.S. It shuts down normally from Safe Mode.

    P.P.S. Three weeks ago I swapped out the old 2-2GB RAM sticks for new 4GB Crucial RAM. I then ran MemTest86+ for 8 full passes with zero errors.
    I've also run the Windows Diagnostics Memory Test successfully.
    The hard drive has checked out but I'll run Chkdsk /f again.

    I allowed the system to shutdown and crash. It wrote the memory dump file which shows the Bugchk code 0x9f. I have attached the error information and perfmon report.

    This has been a persistent error which has completely befuddled HP Tech Support.

    Thanks for the help.

    Hi ghanson. Cuberti is not on line and I took a look at your dump. You have some outdated drivers loaded on your system and a couple of them are quite obsolete (red font). Out of date drivers can cause conflicts and BSOD's. Your dump indicates a driver error. Update these drivers or unsinstall the hardware/software they are associated with.

       Note
    Renaming drivers: create a restore point, using Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers, locate the driver files, and rename them from .sys to .old. Reboot and the drivers will not load. This will break whatever software or hardware these drivers are associated with.

    Note that xbootmgr can be used to troubleshoot shutdown / sleep issues.

    I broke the noted .sys files.
    Upon reboot the card reader didn't work. I downloaded the latest Ricoh card reader driver pack from HP's site. That pack is dated 2010-01-19. Upon installation all of the same Ricoh 2009 driver files were back. According to HP those are the best drivers for the reader.

    I reinstalled the HP webcam with updated drivers from 2010-06-18. The sncduvc.sys did not reappear in \windows\system32\drivers.

    I uninstalled PdaNet. It is a new program used to tether my Samsung Captivate with my laptop. Those drivers are the latest from the programmers. But I took them off while we're working on this issue.

    I noticed that elRawDsk.sys reappeared. I renamed it to .old2 and rebooted. It reappeared! I searched and found it in the iolo System Mechanic common\lib. Anticipating your command I uninstalled System Mechanic. I don't typically use a Registry Cleaner but this ongoing shutdown issue made me desperate. After removing System Mechanic the elRawDsk.sys file does not reappear.

    I will run xbootmgr to trace shutdown and report back.

    Thanks for the help.

    Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate the information on System Mechanic. And, yes, you very effectively anticipated my next suggestion. There is no tuneup utility out there anywhere that can improve Win 7's speed or performance. And they can actually mess up your system.

    What HP is really saying about the card reader is that it is not updated for Win 7. However, those are Vista drivers, and they may work in Win 7. Although, I have dumps directly blame that card for a crashes.

    I'll dump it immediately. I haven't used an SD card in a while anyway.
