Depending on the motherboard / BIOS combination these actually mean something, although most motherboards are using Award, Phoenix, or AMI BIOSes nowadays if it's not strictly an Intel-made board. Given those three BIOSes, 4 beeps indicate one of three things - a system timer error (bad CPU), bad RAM, or a PSU power issue. All are hardware errors though, so it might be good at this juncture to consider starting with a RAM test as it's the easiest to do and the most common hardware component to fail after the hard drive.
