Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Full Retail SP1

Bsod

Hello again folks.
In a previous post, I whined and struggled my way to get a new system running. It's running, but showing the occasional crash. System specs:
System Manufacturer/Model Number Scratch Built Windows 7 Ultimate x64, non OEM (bought it, fresh install)Intel Core 2 Quad 2.83GHz LGA775 Motherboard MSI P43 C51 Memory 2x PNY 2GB DDR3 1333 , 2x Crucial 2GB DDR3 1333 Graphics Card ECS GeForce GTS 450 1GB PCIE 2.0 176 Sound Card Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatality Monitor Acer X203Wbd 20" Widescreen LCD 1680x1050Hard Drives Western Digital Caviar WD5000 500GB 7200RPM SATA
Seagate 250 GB HDD Antec EarthWatts EA650 650W Antec Three Hundred Illusion Mid Tower
4 120mm fans (rear, top, 2 in front) Logitech backlit keyboard Logitech G5 Gaming Mouse
Cable modem (fast)

The symptoms are occasional BSOD, most often associated with gaming through Steam, but that's because it's about all I do with the machine. I have left the machine on for periods of time (a couple of hours) and it's apparently died and restarted once or twice while unattended. I will try to log and then post crashes and circumstances.

Also, I have been unable to download the following windows updates (microsofts solution didn't work)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2416400)
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2378111)
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2387149)

Hi badkarma. I looked at all four of the dumps you uploaded. Each one shows a different bugcheck; that usually indicates a hardware/hardware related problem. All four either indicate or blame memory corruption.

Outdated drivers can cause memory corruption and BSOD's. You have the three out of date drivers loaded on your system; one is quite obsolete. Update these drivers through the links provided.
Quote:
athrx.sys Wed Jul 08 20:49:13 2009 - Atheros network adapter driver. Atheros Communications.

ctac32k.sys Wed Jul 02 04:38:22 2008 - Creative Audio Driver. Creative Worldwide Support

Rt64win7.sys Thu Feb 26 04:04:13 2009 - Realtek RTL8168D/8111D Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false.
Update these drivers and reboot. Let's see how your system does. Post back and let us know. If you get another BSOD, upload it and we will start looking at hardware.

In Device Manager, what shows up under Sound, video and game controllers? Does your on board sound card (chip) show up? You can try renaming the sound card and Atheros drivers. Create a restore point. Using Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers, locate the driver files, and rename them from .sys to .old. Reboot and the drivers will not load. This will break whatever software or hardware these drivers are associated with. If after renaming the Atheros driver, you can no longer connect to the internet, rename this driver back to .sys.

The Realtek driver is an Ethernet driver. You should be able to safely rename it; but I would update it rather than rename it.

Did you try updating these drivers using the links I provided?

I updated 2 of the three drivers that you listed, not the 'Atheros' one. I played Battlefield Bad Company 2 past a point I could not previously reach. I've run the 'puter on 'idle' for some time and it rebooted and complained about it. I will follow up with any anomalous failures. Thanks for all. I'll be in touch

You are certainly welcome for the help. I think there is an update for that Atheros driver.

I did update the Creative driver and the Realtek driver. I thought that the Realtek driver is for the onboard audio? Apparently the Atheros is for the onboard ethernet port. I have had both disabled in the BIOS since I built the system. The onboard audio does not show up in device manager, my Creative X-Fi Fatality and some Nvidia stuff does show up, as expected. I didn't look for the onboard ethernet port in device manager (I use a D-Link PCI wireless card for my network connection) but I'll look tonight. I will update the Atheros driver tonight as well, even though I don't use the device.

If I have another BSOD, should I repeat the BSOD instructions (run the jgriff thing and then perfmon) or just perfmon?

Thanks

You can just upload the dumps if you have another BSOD.
