BSOD & System Recovery not working

Here are my specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Retail, installed clean
My hardware is dated but less than 2 years.
I have been running Win 7 fine for months.

My problem is before when I had errors I was able to just use System Recovery to revert back a week or so and everything was fine. I have tried multiple recovery points and all gave me errors still resulting with the BSOD and a restart when booting normally.

Normal boot -- BSOD and restart
Safe Mode -- works fine

With the recovery not working I'm not sure what to do. I'm hoping it's just a driver or something stupid but am limited to safe mode.

I've attached my dump file but the perfmon / report thing didn't work for me.

Any help reviewing my dump file is greatly appreciated!

Hello and welcome to the forum. Both of your dumps are bugcheck 116, VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE, and blame your video driver, nvlddmkm.sys. Read the following articles on bugcheck 116.

[2-Int] STOP 0x116: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR troubleshooting

https://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...tml#post280172

Other things can cause conflicts with your video subsystem such as outdated drivers and third party antivirus programs. I recommend that you uninstall AVG antivirus using this removal tool:
Tool (64 bit). AVG is a known cause of BSOD's on some Win 7 systems. Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials in it place.

I see an almost guaranteed BSOD maker on your system.

Code:
ASACPI.sys Sun Mar 27 22:30:36 2005
The 2005 version of this driver is a known BSOD cause.
Please visit this link: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support- download_item_mkt
Scroll down to the Utilities category, then scroll down to the "ATK0110 driver for WindowsXP/Vista/Windows 7 32&64-bit " (it's about the 8th item down).
Download and install it.
Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers to check and make sure that the ASACPI.sys file is date stamped from 2009 or 2010 (NOT 2005)
.

Out of date drivers can also create conflicts and cause BSOD's. YOu have the following out dated drivers loaded on your system. Some are quite obsolete. Update these drivers through the links provided or rename them.
Quote:
adfs.SYS Thu Jun 26 16:52:37 2008 - Adobe File System Driver. Adobe. there is no update for this driver. Rename it as described below.

ASACPI.sys Sun Mar 27 22:30:36 2005 - We have alredy convered this driver.

PxHlpa64.sys Mon Dec 10 18:49:01 2007
- Sonic CD/DVD driver (used by many different CD/DVD programs) pxHelp20.sys programs
Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers and rename PxHlpa64.sys to PxHlpa64.BAK
This will break your CD/DVD program, but can easily be renamed after we've finished.

yk62x64.sys Mon Feb 23 10:02:27 2009 - yk62x64.sys - NDIS6.2 Miniport Drive, Marvell: Support. Update this driver.
Follow the above suggestions, reboot and see how your system does. Post back and let us know. If you get another BSOD, upload it and we will test your graphics card.

First off, thanks for the help Carl. I was out all night and just started trying this stuff out.

It was a little weird because some drivers you described I just simply didn't see in my system32/driver folder as you described.

I was able to go to the Asus website and seemed to install the driver correctly but don't see the ASACPI.sys driver in the folder... I don't know why... I tried putting one in there manually but not sure if that's the same. It didn't work.

adfs.bak was created; I didn't see PxHlpa64.sys or yk62x64.sys

Here is my new dump! Hopefully it tells you something.

PS. This may be relevant, you said it might be my graphics card. Before I got the BSOD my monitor was turning on and off saying there was some kind of error but it fixed itself. I'm sorry I forgot.

You are very welcome for the help.

Some drivers are not in the System32\Drivers folder. They are in the C:\Program Files folder in various locations. You can do a search of C: drive for them. This should help -

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Sonic Shared\PX Drivers\pxhlpA64.sys

C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_netmyk00.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_18eefc05dfc312ee\yk62x64.s ys. I believe there is an update for this driver. Use the link I gave you in my previous post and update the driver.

To update a driver, find the driver on the manufacturer's website and download it to your desktop. Unzip the folder to a folder on your desktop. Open the new folder. If there is an .exe file, click on it and it will install the driver. if there is no .exe file, you will have to use Device Manager. Open Device Manager and locate the device associated with the driver you are updating. Right click on that device and click on Properties. Now click on the Driver tab. Click on the Update driver button and select Browse my computer for driver software. Using Browse, navigate to the appropriate folder on your desktop.

You successfully updated this driver. Good job.

Good job with adfs.sys. It does not show up in your latest dumps.

Indeed that is relevant. Your latest three crashes are still BugCheck 116. Before we tackle that, I did find one more driver on your system notorious for causing BSOD's. I missed this the first time.

Uninstall any CD virtualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%. They use a driver, found in your dmp, sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs. Use this SPTD uninstaller when you're done: DuplexSecure - Downloads. Select uninstall; do NOT select reinstall.

Here is a free alternative CD virtualization program that does not use the sptd.sys driver.
Freeware MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD-ROM(MagicDisc) Overview

Once you have uninstalled sptd.sys, reboot and see if you are still getting BSOD's. If you do, test your graphics card with Furmark following the instructions in this tutorial:
Video Card - Stress Test with Furmark. Be sure to monitor your GPX temps. Post back with the results.

If your graphics card passes the stress test, you need to look at your monitor. Do you have another monitor that you can try? You possibly have a short in your current monitor. Unless you are an electronics tech, I do not know of a way that you can test your monitor. If you can try another monitor and if your system does not crash, you have found the problem.

This is where I'm at now:

I replaced all drivers mentioned. Nothing seemed to work.

Additionally I uninstalled and reinstalled my nVidia drivers making sure the nvlddmkm.sys was replaced because the BSOD mentioned something about that driver although it wasn't old.

I FINALLY got passed the BSOD!! BUT now Windows isn't recognizing my graphics card...

When I tried to run the FuMark tests like you said, it give me this error:
Could not initialize ZoomGPU. Failed. Bye!

Right now I'm going to remove and clean the graphics card because it sounds like it may be shot. Although I don't know how to confirm this. May it be possible that it isn't recognizing the card because I reinstalled drivers or something... Not sure.

Thanks

Reinstall the graphics card just as you installed it the first time.

SOLVED

So like I said, I removed the graphics card and cleaned it. I bought compressed air and cleaned out all the dust. Took out the graphics card, cleaned it, then reconnected it making sure everything was snug. VOILA!

I guess the problem was a bad connection or something? The moral of the story is to keep your computer clean I guess. I wanted to thank you so much! I would have been reinstalling Windows without your help and it would have been a pain reinstalling things.

Seriously, keep doing what you're doing!

I spoke too soon. My PC worked for a couple hours but then died again. The computer works fine but I'm back to where I was before with the graphics card not working. I don't really understand why that would happen.

Either way I'm pretty sure it's a dying graphics card so I'm going to see if I can replace it for cheap. Possibly test another card to see if this is the issue.

Thanks for both updates. Keeping the computer clean and making sure connections are solid is important. It does sound like a dying graphics card problem. Try another card and see if that is the problem.
