Windows 7: BSOD when going to sleep

12 Jan 2011   #1

Windows 7 Ultimate x64
BSOD when going to sleep

Is Windows 7 . . .
- x86 (32-bit) or x64 ? x64
- the original installed OS on the system? Windows 7 x64
- an OEM or full retail version? Full Retail

- What is the age of system (hardware)? 1 Year
- What is the age of OS installation (have you re-installed the OS?) 5 Hours. The previous installation did not have this issue, this has only presented itself with a fresh reformat.

Basically what seems to be happening is that whenever the computer is left alone for a few minutes it either locks up, or restarts. I would be more than happy to provide any more details if needed.

Thanks for any assistance

Edit: It has nothing to do with the computer going into standby, I disabled the feature to test that theory and it is still happening. Trying the screensaver now because it still seems to be happening only when the computer has been left alone long enough to trigger either that or previously standby.

Only aged driver
ASACPI.sys Sun Mar 27 22:30:36 2005

The reports that you have submitted reveal clues to the cause of your problem. They do not give a definitive answer. The more reports that we receive the more clues are made available improving our chances of finding a solution to your problem. You may have to experience several more BSODs until the final answer is discovered.

Most likely cause, is a driver replace

If overclocking restore normal settings

SFC /scannow
System Files - SFC Command

Scan with your Anti Virus

Update outdated listed drivers. If I have inadvertently listed any Microsoft Drivers, they can be ignored. If the list is extensive I have included the driver verifier test so that you may determine which drivers are in need of immediate attention.

Asacpi.sys is a driver from the Austek Computer Corp. Your driver is very old and is known to cause BSOD's in current Windows versions; it must be updated

How to Find Drivers
search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone - will help you search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- - if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
- The most common drivers are listed on this page:
- - Driver manufacturer links are on this page:
and here
To remove any left over driver remnants, especially from graphics cards, use driver sweeper

To begin with I want to thank you for your assistance with my problem.

It is my understanding that the atikmdag.sys is part of the drivers that come with my AMD card. I was running the most up to date version, 10.2. However, on the recommendation of your Driver Reference website I uninstalled CCC, ran the driver sweeper program, and reinstalled just the graphics drivers without the CCC component.

I am overclocking my processor from the standard 2.4GHz to ~3.71GHz. I am not sure if this could be causing the problem though as I have been using it at that overclock for the better part of a year without issues. Under load the highest temps that are recorded are just shy of 70C. Also this problem has only come up when I reformatted the computer, so I am unsure how the overclocking could now cause a problem when the previous install of this OS was working fine without a BSOD earlier this week.

I ran "sfc /scannow" and all it reported back was "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations".

Scanned with the MSE, nothing was found.

I looked under the drivers for my motherboard and downloaded the most recent driver involving asacpi.sys, namely "ATK0110 driver for WindowsXP/Vista/Win7 32&64-bit". This appears to be the same version as the one you said was severely outdated however.

I will see if I get another BSOD and if so I will post an updated minidump. Again, thank you for your assistance.

Do not overclock at least for test purposes. If you get another BSOD, you may want to try a rollback of the graphics card
I can, also assure you that the 2005 version of Ascapi is not the most recent. The 2005 Version is known to cause BSOD's
The 2005 version of this driver is a known BSOD cause.
Please visit this link: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support- download_item_mkt
Scroll down to the Utilities category, then scroll down to the "ATK0110 driver for WindowsXP/Vista/Windows 7 32&64-bit " (it's about the 8th item down).
Download and install it.
Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers to check and make sure that the ASACPI.sys file is date stamped from 2009 or 2010 (NOT 2005).

Alright, the system froze this time, what it did was act like it was going into standby and then froze with the monitor left on but on a black screen. At that point the entire system was unresponsive and I had to force a restart. That was usually the point where it would restart itself. While it was turned off I returned the BIOS settings to default to get rid of the OC for the time being.

Regarding the asacpi.sys, that is the driver version I downloaded and installed in my earlier post. I checked the time stamp and it is now saying that it was modified 5/14/2009 so that has to be an improvement.

Attached is a new copy of both the perfmon report and the minidump.

STOP 0x0000003B: SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION Usual causes: System service, Device driver, graphics driver, ?memory
The BC is 3b the potential reasons are given above. Your report further mentions the graphics driver.

For test purposes you may want to try a rollback of the graphics card.

If the rolled back card (dont get an August 2010 date if possible) we will try other tests. A bad driver can be caused by other factors, memory being just one.
We can also go with a GPU test, but that is down the line. I hope to get this problem corrected soon, but if not we will get it corrected.

Good Night

I tried several variations of options regarding standby, screensaver, and the monitor off option because it seemed to only occur when those were triggered. I think I have it nailed down to it only happens when both the screensaver, and the monitor are both scheduled to be turned off at the same time. Since I disabled the screensaver I have had no further issues so I am almost inclined to just let it be at this point.

I think that is the best way to go. Very often these BSOD threads end in a fashion similar to what you mentioned. With the dump reports we can determine the cause. We cannot always correct it. The solution many times is uninstall certain software due to conflict or maybe the same as a situation similar to yours.
