    Windows 7 crashing after update...

Hello all, I've had my laptop for about 3 years now, and have had Windows 7 on it for about a year and a half now. I have never had any issues with 7 until this time, aside from a scarce amount of past bsods which resolved themselves with a simple restart.

However, on 1/12/11 around 2 AM, my laptop started to auto-update. Before I went to sleep I shut it down & installed the updates, then went to sleep. The next morning upon turning on the top, after the windows logo appeared and the updates finished applying themselves, I fell privy to the bsod. After starting up again, it asked me to do a launch system restore, which I did. The system was then fine, but within minutes the auto-update started, and lo and behold -- when i clicked the Start, there was the orange update shield by the shutdown button again. So, I tried it again, same thing, same process. This is now my third restart (but really 6th, since the process involved the initial startup-crash, then reboot to system restore), and I don't know what I should do. Please help me out

    Basic Info:
    -Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit
-Windows Vista was the original OS (pre)installed
-Acquired Windows 7 through a student promotional website http://www.win741.com
    -Laptop aged around 3 years
-Windows 7 installed for around 1.5 years

Additional Info from CPU-Z, S.M.A.R.T. report, and bsod protocol:

    The memory settings are right.
The HDD is also fine except that the temps are a little high, not critical though.

The culprit is Symantec, uninstall and replace it with Microsoft Security Essentials.

    UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP_M (1000007f)
This means a trap occurred in kernel mode, and it's a trap of a kind
that the kernel isn't allowed to have/catch (bound trap) or that
is always instant death (double fault). The first number in the
bugcheck params is the number of the trap (8 = double fault, etc)
Consult an Intel x86 family manual to learn more about what these
traps are. Here is a *portion* of those codes:
    If kv shows a taskGate
use .tss on the part before the colon, then kv.
Else if kv shows a trapframe
            use .trap on that value
    Else
.trap on the appropriate frame will show where the trap was taken
(on x86, this will be the ebp that goes with the procedure KiTrap)
    Endif
kb will then show the corrected stack.
    Arguments:
    Arg1: 00000008, EXCEPTION_DOUBLE_FAULT

Thank you so much, cybercore, everything appears to be fine now. After uninstalling symantec, I re-tried the update as prompted and it installed without difficulty. Now I'll grab the security essentials. If anything else goes screwy, I'll make another post.

Would you also please provide a link to update the drivers for my video card as recommended?

You say your laptop is 3 yrs old - let's hope support still offers drivers.
