just to say a thanks to Golden and Anak...amusingly the issue hasn't arisen but i will be disabling startup repair using the threads provided.

Hi,

Well thats good news. If it does happen again, try to see if you can correlate it with soemthing you are doing. For example, it always happens when you unplug a USB drive and then shutdown as a very simple example.

You get the idea.
