    BSOD Update


    Well, it seemed a hopeless task, but I tried removing 2gb of RAM (slots 2 and 4) to see if it helped and amazingly it did! The machine was stable for several weeks, so I was pretty confident I had stumbled upon the culprit: a damaged simm. I inspected the removed simms closely and couldn't spot anything visible except for a very slight discolouration of a few of the pins. This is only visible at certain angles, so I'm not sure it's really relevant.

    I can't run all my apps on 2GB under Windows 7/64, so I elected to use the opportunity for a slight upgrade and bought 2x2gb simms to replace the ones I removed. Last weekend I installed these and everything seemed fine. I was a happy chap and thinking about writing in to say the problem was resolved.

    Last night the BSOD returned How annoying!

    My theory is that the machine would have remained stable on 2 x 1gb RAM, and the problem is due to the additional ram. The chances of my new RAM having a similar problem to the old sticks seems remote, so I guess this points to a problem with the motherboard or simm sockets?

    I'm thinking of swapping out the remaining 2x1gb and replacing with my new 2x2gb (at least then I will have enough RAM for normal use). Is there anything I should be looking for?

    It seems like this is most likely either a power problem or motherboard problem; there's a slim chance the new RAM is also defective.

    Could you try running with a known-good stick in the other motherboard slot?
