Windows 7 safe mode reboots at Classpnp.sys

So basically I have Windows 7 installed on a 250GB Seagate external HD. I can boot it with no problems using a VM in VMware Workstation 7.1.3, but whenever I try to native boot it, it takes a long time to load and when the 'starting windows' is reached a blue screen flashes and then the machine reboots.

I tried to run it in safe mode, but it reached Classpnp.sys and then rebooted.

Any ideas?

Cheers.

Hi HNipps , sounds like you have a corrupted system file , have a look at this excellent tutorial SFC /SCANNOW : Run in Command Prompt at Boot

I have followed that tutorial, but I'm still having the same issue.
I used this tutorial to install W7 on the USB HD - Install Windows 7 on a USB Stick/Flash drive Techno-Cranio Idiocracy
Also, I am trying to run W7 from the USB on a Macbook Pro 5.5. I have tried it on a windows based laptop, but there is still the same issue.

Thanks for your help Pebbly, the Classpnp.sys error has been fixed but now the system reboots once agp440.sys has been loaded. Do you think it's a problem with agp440.sys or the file that is being loaded after that?

Hi HNipps, try updating the mobo chipset drivers then the video card drivers

I have tried to update the drivers, but it says that I can't install the driver because the hardware is not detected.
The only time I can boot the system to the desktop is in a virtual machine in VMware workstation on a laptop running Windows Vista. I can't native boot the Windows 7 system on this laptop in normal or safe-mode and I cannot do this on my Macbook Pro 5.5 either. The Macbook is the main device on which I want to run Windows 7 from the USB HD. I know what drivers I need to install, but is there any way to install the drivers using the virtual machine? Even though the hardware won't be detected.

The Classpnp.sys issue has been resolved now, but the system reboots after agp440.sys has been loaded.
The next line in the boot log says - Did not load driver @hal.inf,%acpiapic.devicedesc%;ACPI x86-based PC.

Old post, I know - but I came upon this issue today so I thought I'd comment.

The problem here would be with the file after agp440.sys and chances are you never had a problem with Classpnp.sys, but rather the file after classpnp.sys. When booting to safe mode, it's my understanding that it doesn't list a file on the screen until AFTER it has loaded sucessfully. If it fails to load a file, you will need to check logs as you will never see it actually listed.
