    Crashing, crashing, crashing

It all started off with the game HAWX. Played fine for a few minutes, maybe up to 10-15 min but then crash- game freeze, sound continued for a few more seconds then stalled. Needed to reboot PC to go anywhere. Ctrl-alt-del not work. Went through their support services and got usual list of things to do - reload game, ensure drivers up to date, flash BIOS, shut down all non-essential programs, run in XP mode,... Eventually they gave up and said the game wasn't designed for Windows 7 so tough luck (it wasn't their exact wording but it gave the general idea).

Other resource hungry games work fine- e.g. Crysis, Bioshock, CoD Modern Warfare, Fallout 3, Medal of Honor, etc.

Now during Call of Duty: Black Ops I am back to the same problem as HAWX. Plays fine for maybe 10-20 minutes then crash - screen frozen. Occasionally can Ctrl-Alt-Del out of it but often stuck and need to reboot PC. Managed to create a dump file during a Ctrl-Alt-Del but no idea what to do with it. Would happily upload but even the zipped version is >600MB. Seems to happen during the single player game but not during internet mutliplayer games.

DxDiag should be attached. Grateful for any suggestions.
    thanks JM

As you've discovered, dump files are too big.
    You need to enable minidumps.

    b]To ensure minidumps are enabled:[/b]

Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
    OK your way out.
Reboot if changes have been made.

The .dmp files are located at C:\Windows\Minidump. Until a .dmp file is generated, the Minidump folder may not exist.

To get the .dmp files: Go to your C:\Windows\Minidump folder. Copy the .dmp files to a new folder on your desktop. Zip up that folder and attach to a post.

    Typical...

That is just typical. Play for another hour to try and get a crash registered and nothing. Will try again tomorrow.

    Now got a mini-DMP file

A couple more hours Call of Duty and only one crash. Was able to get out of it via Task Manager so it did not create a DMP file.

Went back to HAWX which crashes much more 'reliably' after a minute or two. Have a mini-DMP file to upload. See attached.

Hopefully it is the same problem causing crashsd in HAWX and CoD but will keep going with CoD to try and capture a DMP file.

    Thanks

    Hi loganjm.

Your dump file has a stop erroer 0x116 which points to a graphics card error.

    STOP 0x00000116: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR
    Usual causes:
Video driver, overheating, bad video card, ?BIOS, ?Power to cardOld and incopatible drivers can and do contribute to BSOD's so would advise updating them.

    As a priorty:

AVG is known to be a cause of BSOD's on some Win 7 systems. Suggest to you uninstall it. Download the correct AVG Remover for your system (32 or 64 bit).
If you have AVG ID protection installed, download the AVGID Protection Remover from the above link as well (it wouldn't hurt to download and run it anyway). Download Microsoft Security Essentials as its replacement. Re-boot to Safe Mode. In Safe Mode run the AVG Removal tools. Re-boot to normal mode and install MSE. Make sure your Windows firewall is enabled!

Update to the new version of Catalyst v11.1 following these guidelines.
    Download Catalyst v11.1.
    Download and install Driver Sweeper.
    Boot to Safe Mode
    Uninstall current Catalyst set up.
Run Driver Sweeper to clean up any left overs.
    Install your new Catalyst v11.1.
    Reboot to Normal Mode.

Three system restores but problem still the same

    Thanks for your help.
Don’t think problem is overheating as Call of Duty will either crash within first 10 minutes or not at all. HAWX crashes within a few minutes, but can bring it on within a minute with the games Graphics Stress Test. This happens even if I take the graphics options down to the most basic settings. Other games do not crash – does this go against a physical problem such as graphic card defect or a power supply problem?

I made most of the changes suggested, i.e. the ones I felt confident / competent to carry out. Even with that still had to use system restore three times.

    From the link provided:
    · FurMark stability & stress test levelled out about 80oc with no problems.
    · GIMPS/PRIME95 FROZE the PC after about 45 minutes but did not create a miniDMP file.
    · PC is not overclocked.
    · Video Memory Stress test – no problems.
    · Checked hard drive for errors – no problems.
    · Did not know how to reinstall directx so no changes made.
    · Pagefile reset as described in article.
    · System File Checker SFC.exe /SCANNOW – no problems.

    From your suggestions:
    · Updated to Catalyst 11.1 after uninstalling previous driver and running Driver Sweeper
    · Removed AVG and installed Microsoft Security
    · Drivers:
o ArcSoft ASPI– thought it was leftover from digital camera software but deleting it stopped DVD drives from working so I put it back unchanged.
o Intel Storage Matrix – Intel website and device manager both says driver up-to-date. No changes made.
    o Intel 82566 – Driver updated.
o Logitech – Driver updated but caused Visual C++ runtime error whenever I booted-up PC so I went back to previous settings.
o PC Line webcam driver – no company website and cannot find a recent driver by Google search. Only find lots of people looking for one.
    o PACE-antipiracy – driver updated.

Anyway tried HAWX again after making these changes. Again crashed within a minute. PC froze then blank screen but did not reset itself so no mini-DMP file made. Tried again and got false hope as made it through the graphics stress test for the first time ever. Tried a third and fourth time and it crashed same as before.

Call of Duty played ok for an hour or so with no problems after making the changes, but it does not crash as often as HAWX so will need to test a bit more before drawing any conclusions.

Sorry, somehow I missed this post. If you're still having problems can you upload your new *.dmp files.

More often than not the PC freezes but does not go to BSOD or reset so does not automatically create a DMP file. Is there any way of getting around this?
