    Recurring BSOD

About a few days ago, I installed a new internal hard drive on my computer. Nothing bad has been happening until today. So far, I've gotten a BSOD about 3-5 times. First time, the screen said "irql not equal or less". That's been more or less coming back every time. Bad hard drive maybe?

    This is the drive:
Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar Blue WD10EALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

I'll try to get some dump reports on here if I get a chance.

Here are the dumps from today.

I just wanted to get the topic up before hand so I could do this quickly before another crash.

All right. Talked with my computer bro and we thought it was the power supply. Replaced it and so far no crashes. Looks like that was the only problem: weak power supply.

Your latest dump blames storport.sys which is a Windows system driver and unlikely to be the real cause. I suspect there is something causing conflict. Certainly a bad power supply will cause BSOD's. However, you have a some very out of date drivers that have the potential to cause conflicts and BSOD's. The nature of this dump leads me to suspect that is the cause of this crash. I will list the outdated drivers in case you get another crash, you can then update these drivers. Outdated modem modem drivers, LAN drivers, and wireless drivers are known to cause conflicts and BSOD's and yours are quite obsolete. I would update them or disable the modem if you are not using dialup.

Ya, I'm still getting crashes. Only now, it's happening pretty much every time I boot. Safe mode works sometimes, but I still get freezes and crashes. I'll try to update the drivers at next chance.

Please let me know the results. Unfortunately, when the dumps don't point to a specific cause, our only tool is the process of elimination.

Is it possible by any chance that my old hdd is going bad. I mean, I think I've had it now for 4 or so years. Or is this simply a software issue?

That is a possibility; but the dump do not point to the hard drive. Try running CheckDisk to check your file system. Look for the number of bad clusters, if any. That can be the tell tale sign of a failing hard drive.

Run CHKDSK /R /F from an elevated (Run as adminstrator) Command Prompt. Please do this for each hard drive on your system.
When it tells you it can't do it right now - and asks you if you'd like to do it at the next reboot - answer Y (for Yes) and press Enter. Then reboot and let the test run. It may take a while for it to run, but keep an occasional eye on it to see if it generates any errors. See "CHKDSK LogFile" below in order to check the results of the test.

    Elevated Command Prompt:
Go to Start and type in "cmd.exe" (without the quotes)
At the top of the Search Box, right click on Cmd.exe and select "Run as administrator"

    CHKDSK LogFile:
Go to Start and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Expand the Windows logs heading, then select the Application log file entry.
Double click on the Source column header.
Scroll down the list until you find the Chkdsk entry (wininit for Windows 7) (winlogon for XP).

Copy/paste the results into your next post.
