I thought SP1 was supposed to solve issues not create them! Should I allow it to try again when it updates again? I would think that from the advice on this forum that it's best to keep Windows as up to date as possible? It has been OK for a while-perhaps it was sorting itself out in the background and stabilising itself?

Typically, you're correct about keeping Windows up-to-date. I haven't seen problems with SP1 concerning BSODs, so I continue to make sure it's installed. However, if you feel there is a link between your problems and the SP1 installation, it's a good idea to remove it and see if the problems stop.
OK-I'll take it off and if it doesn't freeze again I'll put it down to that. Strange it doesn't do regular bsod though-just a no response freeze at the desktop.

The most common reasons for Service Pack problems are
- malware
- older drivers
If you find that SP1 is the cause, then I'd start with antimalware scans and driver updates - because you're going to have to have SP1 eventually.
Hello and thanks again. Sorry, was away a couple of days and not had time to remove SP1 yet.
Noticed a possible pattern in that every time I would start the PC after installing SP1 it freezes ususally after loading the desktop, but sometimes a minute or two afterwards. Once it froze on the Windows logo screen. Still no BSODs though
I am running MSE and Malware Antibytes and neither have found anything. Am wary of trying anything else due to the compatibility issues I was having before, unless anyone can suggest one that has had no issues with W7 64 please?
Still not entirely sure how to check all my drivers are up to date like the nice list Usasma posted - the ones that Usasma posted have been updated since the reinstall, so not sure if there was anything else to update.
Is there any chance an old keyboard and old, shaky mouse might be a problem? I cannot find drivers for the 6 year old HP keyboard or the 5 year old Genius XScroll mouse.

Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers and sort the drivers there by date.
Let us know the older one's and we'll work from there.
Just FYI - all the updated drivers in the world won't help out incompatible hardware. I'm referring here to the history of memory problems that the Asus P5 series of motherboard seem to have with Win7.

Thanks-I have posted on Corsair to see if they know the settings as my pc builder seems to not know what I should input for the memory/BIOS. I will taje the RAM out and see if it more stable then.
I have attached a driverview dump of the installed drivers. Strange thing is that I have downloaded and run the GEARinstaller for GEARAspiWDM.sys driver, as well as unistalling the installer and then reinstalling it and the date still says 2009, when the release date on the site at Driver updates - GEAR Software gives a date on Feb 2010.
May I ask what internet security you use please?

That's a mighty long list of drivers - you'll have to pull out the older one's for me in order for us to get started (I just don't have the time to go through the entire list). Just pull out everything dated from 2009 and earlier (if possible, keep the 2010 drivers in another list).
I use Microsoft Security Essentials and the Windows firewall - they've been plenty to protect me over the years.
In 1991 I got a virus called the Joshi virus. Since then I have had viruses on my systems, but they've never executed and infected the systems. I attribute this to 2 things:
- scanning everything that I download with an antivirus scanner
- never clicking on anything that I don't know if it's safe or not. I would rather shut my system down by pulling the plug from the wall.
FYI - I do surf to bad places while testing what I've read on the forums - and when that happens I don't let anything execute and I perform a complete system antivirus scan immediately afterwards.

It was quite a list I agree! I have pared it down to just the 2009 ones, and there's nothing earlier than that. They mostly look like MS Windows drivers. However as I said the GEARAspiWDM.sys driver does not seem to update, unless that is the latest one included in the driver installer.
Thanks for the advice on the security. I'll keep using MSE and the native firewall in that case.

Edit - Have just found out from Corsair forums that the place to make the changes for the voltages and latency on the P5QL-EPU mobo is the Chipset option on Advanced Tab, where Manual setting gives the option to make these changes. Previously I was only able to specify the RAM type and MHz.

There's only 3 non-Windows drivers in the list (Windows drivers are updated by visiting Windows Update - if it doesn't update, then there's no newer version):
ASACPI.sys - this is the latest version
GEARAspiWDM.sys - this is the latest version
serial.sys - a Brother driver (interestingly, this is a Windows driver on my system)
Have you installed any Brother products on your system?
