Help please - Multiple BSOD W7 64

Hiya-Quick update,

No BSODs for a couple of days now. Opened up the machine and cleaned a load of dust and accumulated-god-knows-what from both the GPU and CPU fans and heatsinks and the temperatures are better. GPU is not going higher than 88C now on Furmark which according to ATI forums is within acceptable operating temps.

Also ran Prime 95 for 7 hours with no errors on the Small FFTs test (seeing as how the memtest came up with no errors either).

Hey folks-Thought I would provide an update as a warning. I asked the people who built my PC to tell me the correct settings for the memory bios and while I was there they suggested using PCWizard to check on the temps.

Within 2 minutes of having pcwizard on system and running it, it caused two BSODs (NTFS.SYS 0x24 and NDIS.SYS 0x3B). As soon as I could I uninstalled pcwizard and it's been OK since. So just to warn that unless it is a coincidence, that PCwizard does not play nice with W764!

Have attached dumpfiles in case anyone thinks it may be due to something else.

Does anyone know any all in one system and temp etc monitor software that is safe please? Thanks!

PS-Have just run the performance monitor to put in the crash zip and I thought I had removed ipodrv but it is saying this: "The device, iPodDrv, is reporting "tv_ConfigMgrErr24". This device will not be available until the issue is resolved. The Plug and Play ID for this device is ROOT\LEGACY_IPODDRV\0000"

Should I be concerned? I removed a programme called doubletwist for my HTC phone that works like itunes for the android as I thought this might be using it, and am now using my xp netbook to manage the music on my phone. It's odd because I do have an ipod and itunes too, and the ipod works fine so I can't think this ipoddrv is referring to the ipod as it works fine? Confused

PPS-sfc/scannow came up with no errors, again.

Recently PCWizard has been showing up in memory dump files with a greater frequency.
While this isn't a definitive diagnosis - it does cause us to wonder about it.

iPoDrv.sys is a component of DoubleTwist. If you've uninstalled that program and the device still resides on your system - just go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers and rename it from .sys to .BAK That will prevent it from loading.

There's nothing unusual in the memory dumps, so I'd agree with you that it's the PCWizard stuff.

Hiya - Thanks for looking into dumps and glad to see my amateur diagnosis may not have been too far from the truth!

However while I was trying to write the first reply I got another BSOD, this time from dxgmms1.sys (D1).

Also when I tried to go into system32/drivers the ipodrv is not there

Have attached a screenshot too. And checked in msconfig (if that's relevant-not sure!) and the driver is not listed under startup or services.

Any ideas greatly appreciated - I was thinking of uninstalling the catalyst control centre fro ATI and just having the driver? Any thoughts please?

I'll have a go at speedfan-thanks for the pointer.

PS-Am getting tempted to do a clean install; all my data is backed up-what do you think?

I'd search through Device Manager to find the iPodDrv device.
Ensure that you select "View...Show hidden devices"
We just have to find out where the DoubleTwist program left traces and that'll tell us what's left to remove.
Easier said than done! :) Maybe reinstall the DoubleTwist and then uninstall it?

I would get rid of Catalyst Control Center - older versions have had issues in the past.

As for the clean install, it's an excellent idea.
First wipe the hard drive with DBAN or KillDisk, then install Windows
Then check Device Manager and install drivers for only those items that have issues
As this is an Asus board, also check the date on the ASACPI.sys driver. If you have the 2005/2006 version - update it also.
Then set the RAM settings/timings/voltages from the Corsair website.
Then install Microsoft Security Essentials - and wait for the BSOD (don't install anything else for the time being)

If you don't get a BSOD - then it was Windows/drivers that were at fault (and you fixed it by reinstalling Windows)
If you do get a BSOD, then it's most likely a hardware issue - but we'll have to see a couple of BSOD's to be sure.

Right, I think I'll do a clean install after using killdisk and go nowhere near virtualclonedrive, doubletwist and pcwizard (or spotify which caused problems a few months ago too)!

I currently have partitions, C for all windows and programme files and D for all other files-movies, music, games etc. Is this helpful or is it a waste of time for when I reinstall?

As for the GPU I'll see how things go with just the latest ATI drivers, so no CCC-just checked the drivers for ATI and there is an ATI Integrated Driver and a Display Driver-do I need both do you think or just the display driver?

How long should I wait for new bsod's before putting stuff like photoshop and chrome back on do you think?

Final question please-I have ordered another 2 Gb of RAM, exact same as what is in there already-should I wait until I put it in before reinstalling windows so it has a fresh start or does that not really make any difference?

A partitioning scheme is entirely up to you. I don't bother with it - but I do ensure that everything that I save/need to save is in the same place. I do around 10 system backups a week at work - and find that it's crucial to keep everything with your user profile. That way everything that you need is in one place - so the backup chore is simple:

Where G:\ is my backup device (a USB hard drive)

You just need the ATI Display Driver

Wait for BSOD's longer than the interval between BSOD's previously. I'd suggest twice as long, but that's really up to you. When in doubt, wait a week.

I'd wait until you have the system stable before adding more RAM. Remember what I said about the Asus P5 series of boards - they do have RAM issues with the Auto setting. I have little knowledge about RAM settings/timings/voltages - and very little feedback from those who have followed my advice on the P5 series of boards.

Excellent-thanks again.

I won't bother with the faff of partitioning and redirecting folders etc then. I was thinking sticking more RAM would help stabilise it but I'll wait for the pc builders to give me the settings for AI Tweaker before adding that too, after the reinstall.

I'll try to remember to post back in a few weeks of having a stable system to feedback on the manual RAM settings for the mobo.

Hello again - I was hoping I would not have to post again so soon.

I have not been having BSODs, but since yesterday, 6 days after wiping the drive and reinstalling W7, I have had 4 lockups/freezes almost straight after the desktop emerges after the loading screen.

After reinstall I installed MSE and just the ATI Driver, and I waited until Wednesday before putting photshop CS5, chrome, itunes, malwarebytes and utorrent and adding the new 2gb of the same RAM that was in before. I have nothing else installed.

Since SP1 was installed from Windows Updates last night, I have been having these freezes that do not become bsods, just hangs.

Does anyone think SP1 is responsible? Any advice greatly appreciated, again!

Try uninstalling SP1; see if that does the trick. In Windows Update, select "Installed Updates". Right-click on "Service Pack For Microsoft Windows", and select Uninstall.
