Multi BSOD over time (Win 7 64bit--overclocked)

Hey there and thanks for sparing me your time,

I have been having multiple BSOD over the last couple of months even though my system is relatively new.

I bought my system from Overclockers UK in October (it's the Titan Xenomorph model) and it is overclocked (stats to do with the overclock are provided later). I began having problems in December with seemingly random freezing (the system becomes unresponsive and requires a hard shutdown) or BSODs (usually memory dumping occurs and then restart), they seem to be more common when I am working my computer with multiple programs but otherwise it is completely random and can happen with varying intervals. I don't know whether this is a hardware issue, an overclock issue, a driver or a software issue. I purchased this system on the grounds it was stable but now I am worried that the overclock is bad or what and I am unsure how to solve the situation.

I have posted as much info as I thought may be helpful but I can always get more info if required.

NOT CURRENTLY OVERCLOCKED

Recent changes to my system are me trying to solve the problem. I wiped and reinstalled the original NVIDIA ZOTAC drivers for my card and my sound card and I uninstalled Daemon tools (heard it can cause problems).

I ran memtest while in windows for 1 pass without errors, I ran furmark without problems too. I really can't pin down when/why the problem started.

I really am losing my mind over this as this rig has cost me a lot and should be able to run games smoothly without this sort of error.
(Edit 20Feb11) >> I remembered that I had many BSODs when trying to run 'Tomb Raider: Guardian of Light' (steam product) even though I could run Black Ops on MAX without a single hitch.

If it was me I would go back into bios and load setup defaults and see how it runs. I have bought computers that were so far out of whack in the bios that the computer wouldn't even boot until i reset the bios back to default values and started working from there. After that the blue screens went away and booting problems as well. I don't have the knowledge of reading dmp files but there usually caused by driver issues......

Hmm....
I am tempted to do that but it did use to run absolutely fine with the overclock and I'd be losing quite alot of power and if the problem is a driver issue then I don't want to cut off my gaming power when it's something else. (Plus I don't know how to restore defaults safetly and whatnot)

Thank you. I sure hope they can help.

Just had another BSOD. I was downloading in the Background and launched into SC2. When I went to select one of the menus the computer froze briefly (3 secs) then went to a BSOD. Same Keyword as last time: (0x8000000000000002) but this time all the bugcheckcode and bugcheckparameters1-4 were all 0x0 instead of having varying values.

I haven't had any BSODs today but, then again, I haven't been using the system much. I've also added some additional infomation about the problem; I remembered that I had major issues running 'Tomb Raider: Guardian of Light'.

Has anyone had a chance to check out the dumps yet? :)

Just had another couple of BSODs. I installed driver for my Razer Naga and did a firmware update for the mouse. About ten minutes later I booted up iTunes and the program froze up, I tried to boot up iTunes a second time and it froze up then BSOD'd. It then began rebooting but BSOD'd before Windows loaded. I then did windows startup recovery and it identified it as a driver error. Although I understand it is likely the mouse, I am still uncertain as I don't want to believe I've just added another problem driver.

Just ran into another BSOD. This time it was just as I launched into Mass Effect 2. I got into the game and started moving around but 5 seconds in the game freezes and then BSOD. Stop code was a string of zeroes then 7F as well as bracketed codes that I didn't have chance to record (auto restart has now been disabled).
I am now going to revert to fail-safe defaults in an attempt to avoid the problem, as Seth500 suggested, and will report if I get any more BSODs. I will also run a Memtest overnight and post the results in the morning.
Any help in the meantime would still be appreciated.

I am losing my mind here. Please help me.

Hi JuGG.

I've had a quick look through your latest dump file. The only driver issues I've spotted are detailed below. As you can see the 7F stop error code lists a multitude of possible sins, including overclocking.

STOP 0x0000007F: UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP
Usual causes: Memory corruption, Hardware (memory in particular), Installing a faulty or mismatched hardware (especially memory) or a failure after installing it, 3rd party firewall, Device drivers, SCSI/network/BIOS updates needed, Improperly seated cards, Incompatible storage devices, Overclocking, Virus scanner, Backup tool, Bad motherboard, Missing Service Pack.

Your latest dump file lists ntkrnlmp.exe as the probable cause. This is a Windows System file and for it to be the cause of your crash is highly unlikely.

As a Priority:

sptd.sys Sun Oct 11 21:55:14 2009 The sptd.sys driver is notorious for causing BSOD's with Windows 7. It's a driver used and installed along with Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120 which you'll also have to uninstall.
Then use the correct (32bit or 64bit) download from Duplex Secure - Downloads to uninstall the SPTD.SYS driver.
Make sure to select the uninstall button! DO NOT SELECT INSTALL!!
Virtual Drives
A couple of alternatives to DT/Alcohol that do not use SPTD.SYS (In no order).
DVDFab. Very small at just over 1Mb installed (My preference).
PowerISO (The program is a trial but the drive emulation is free forever).

Outdated Drivers. Update:

Sorry I can't be of more help. Overclocking is not something I'm really up to speed with. Having said that, with the age of your system, I'd be giving some serious consideration to contacting Overclockers UK.

Thanks for your advice fimble,
I have got rid of that pesky .sys, I didn't realise it was left behind, and downloaded DVDFab as an appropriate replacement if I need a VD in the future. I've also grabbed that driver update which I didn't spot.

STOP 0x0000007F: UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP
Usual causes: Memory corruption, Hardware (memory in particular), Installing a faulty or mismatched hardware (especially memory) or a failure after installing it, 3rd party firewall, Device drivers, SCSI/network/BIOS updates needed, Improperly seated cards, Incompatible storage devices, Overclocking, Virus scanner, Backup tool, Bad motherboard, Missing Service Pack.

Your latest dump file lists ntkrnlmp.exe as the probable cause. This is a Windows System file and for it to be the cause of your crash is highly unlikely.

That's pretty much everything! Now the most likely ones I imagine are the overclock and the hardware corruption.

Now, currently I'm running at a standard clock rate and haven't encountered a BSOD from playing Mass Effect 2 (a game that crashed 2 seconds in previously) so I'm beginning to think that the clock is the root of the problem. However, is it not strange to suddenly occur after a few months?
The other possibility is the sitting of the components as I did move house and I suppose the sitting could of been damaged then (however, we were very careful about how the PC was transferred).
Finally, driver and software issues are probably the last call (when at first I thought it was the most likely reason) as I am certainly leaning towards my computer having an unstable overclock.

I will have to see in time I suppose but if the BSODs stop for a good couple of weeks then I can safely blame the overclock. If that's the case how much of a good standing do you reckon I will have with OCUK? Because, in my eyes, they have sold me an unstable system with different specs than advertised.

In closing, thanks for taking the time to look through the files and offer such sound advice. You've certainly relaxed me a bit even if this does not get to the bottom of the problem.
