Windows 7 x64 Random BSODs ONLY WHEN NOT GAMING - Please help!

Hi all,

for about a year I keep getting random BSODs, ever since I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I have tried to diagnose them, but I'm really new to this and haven't managed to find out what's wrong.

Ever since I installed a new graphics card, I keep getting "black screens of death" (screen goes black then after about 10 seconds the system reboots; most of the time, a minidump is created) as well, so maybe there are several problems involved.

Today, I have dabbled a little with driver verifier (as you will see in my dumps) but to no avail. After about 10 BSODs today (some due to driver verifier), I give up.

The interesting thing is: These BSODs don't happen during gaming, only in "desktop mode". I reckon if my hardware is busted, I shouldn't be able to play 10 hours in a row with no problems whatsoever.

Many of the BSODs occured right after starting windows. In fact, when starting windows, most of the time I get a BSOD and my PC restarts, and only then can I log in.

I haven't got all the dumps for the entire year since I deleted most of them, but I attached those I still have.

Please help me, I'm really at my wit's end! :-(

Several problems

1-sptd.sys used in daemon tools and alcohol. Huge cause of BSODD's

Please remove any CD virtualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%. They use a driver, found in your dmp, sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs. Use this SPTD uninstaller when you're done: DuplexSecure - Downloads

You can use MagicDisc as an alternative.

Freeware MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD-ROM(MagicDisc) Overview

2- About half of these were caused by your video driver
Re-install it using these
When upgrading your graphic driver you MUST remove all traces of the current driver. In order to do that we recommend using Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

When it is removed then download and install the fresh copy.

3-memory. several pointed at memory. Run memtest to check yours.

Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot. Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

4-AVG sometimes causes BSOD's remove and replace with microsoft security essentials.

AVG - Download tools

5-hardware. If thes above dont rectify the situation read here.

Your .dmp file shows a stop error of 0x124 which is a general hardware error .. A "stop 0x124" is fundamentally different to many other types of bluescreens because it stems from a hardware complaint. Stop 0x124 minidumps contain very little practical information, and it is therefore necessary to approach the problem as a case of hardware in an unknown state of distress. You can read more on this error and what to try here... Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try

Windows 7 Ultimate x64

I've done the following so far:

1. I have completely removed Daemon Tools and used the SPDT uninstaller to remove sptd.sys.

2. That was a good call, as I had a lot of stuff from ATI AND Nvidia on my machine. However, Driver Sweeper from Guru3D crashed and its auto-update crashed too (maybe because of Windows 7 x64?). However, I downloaded the newest version from its homepage and removed everything. Interestingly, I had to run the program two or three times until everything was completely removed. I then downloaded and installed the newest Nvidia driver.

3. I let Memtest+ run over night. After nearly 11 hours and 13 passes, it didn't find a single error. I didn't know what settings to use, so I used its default setting, only enabling the beep when it finds an error.

4. After much reading of the SevenForums, I downloaded and tried Microsoft Security Essentials and Avast. I liked Avast much better, so I stuck with that and uninstalled Microsoft Security Essentials. From what I read here, Avast shouldn't cause blue screens, right?

5. I also suspect some piece of hardware. What is strange though is that all the bluescreens only occur when I'm on the desktop, i.e. mailing, browsing the web, or just letting my PC sit idle. I game a lot and I didn't have a single bluescreen while gaming yet. If my CPU or mainboard were faulty, I'd expect crashes while gaming, i.e. when the hardware is stressed to its max, and not when it's sitting more or less idle, don't you think?

Unfortunately, all of the above steps didn't resolve my BSOD problem. I have the feeling there are less bluescreens now, but there still are a lot. I have attached a zip with minidumps I got after I did everything outlined above.

What next?

Thanks for your help!
