BSOD/lock up problems

Hi All,

I just purchased an ASUS K-52JC laptop as an open-box item. It came pre-installed with Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I believe these models came out in early 2010, so the hardware may be slightly dated.

I'm getting occassional BSODs and lockups. I though the BSOD might be related to "sleep" or "hibernating" mode, but I tested those options on/off and could not replicate it.

I looked at the last mini dump:
DEFAULT_BUCKET_ID: VISTA_DRIVER_FAULT
PROCESS_NAME: System

but I've attached the .zip file as described in the BSOD posting instructions. I only have 30 days from date of purchase to return the laptop if there are problems, and I'd really like to be able to keep it - so your help is appreciated!

Please remove any CD virtualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%. They use a driver, found in your dmp, sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs. Use this SPTD uninstaller when you're done: DuplexSecure - Downloads
You can use MagicDisc as an alternative.

Code:
sptd.sys fffff880`01034000 fffff880`01191000 0x0015d000 0x4c7362f8 24/08/2010 10:13:12
A hardware error was also cause, update your BIOS
Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try

RMA the laptop and get a replacement if the suggestions in the above link does not work
Code:
BugCheck 124, {0, fffffa8006eb8028, be000000, 800400}

Unable to load image \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\intelppm.sys, Win32 error 0n2
*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for intelppm.sys

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I uninstalled Alcohol and this is the only software of that type that I have.

I downloaded the 64-bit version of SPTD, but when I try to run it, it says it is not a valid Win32 application. I tried downloading and running again and got the same error.

Please advise on this, and I will continue with your other instructions in the meantime.

You must run it as Admin

Ok, I tried to install SPTD as admin, but got the same error. I even tried downloading and installing as admin on another 64-bit machine and got the same thing.

I turned off overclocking in the bios, updated all hardware related drivers and the bios. Let me know what you think about the SPTD.

Thanks.

Then you should manually prevent sptd.sys from loading
Boot in safe mode and go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers, locate sptd.sys and rename it to sptd.sys.old

Going on 2 days now without any BSODs or lockups! Renamed that driver as well, but so far so good. Thanks for your help!

Went 3 days with no issues, but just got another blue screen. Attached is the minidump log. If you could review and advise, I'd appreciate it!

Latest one is totally different and is a hardware related error, it is usually caused by a failing CPU/GPU/RAM
Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try

- Update the BIOS
- Stop any overclocking
Test the CPU since intelppm.sys(the Intel Processor driver) was involved in the crash: https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...t-prime95.html

I had already updated the BIOS and turned off overclocking. Went 5 days with no problems, but have had 3 BSOD in the last few days. If I'm going to return the laptop, I need to do it in the next day or two, so I have to make a decision.

I've attached the minidumps from the last 3 BSODs. I am running prime95 now. After looking at the dumps, and if prime95 doesn't produce any errors, what is your recommendation?
