    Windows 7 boot sequence loop

Apologies if this is in the wrong section but there's a few issues so general discussion seemed best.

Basically my laptop froze up and crashed and on turning it back on got stuck in a boot loop, and on trying to do a system repair got stuck in the same loop. I've tried everything I can find on these forums including the following tutorial:

    Startup Repair Infinite Loop Recovery

During the tutorial whilst trying to create the back up folder I got the following error message: "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error"

Has anyone got any suggestions on how to fix this issue, or on how to back up my data through command prompt? I tried reinstalling Windows but that also failed so before I do a complete reinstall I'd like to back up my data to an external hard drive if possible.

Any help would be fantastic as I really don't want to lose all my work data, game data, movies etc.

    Cheers
    Tom

Can you start in safe mode?
If so you could look in the Control panel (classic)- System - Advanced system settings - Advanced tab.
Open the "Start up and recovery option and make sure you have unticked "Automatically restart."
Just a small thought but could be the cause?

When you're having crashes and I/O errors, I tend to find that is a bad HDD. My recommendation is to stop messing with it before you erase your data or make the hard drive kill itself even faster.

Get a new hard drive, reinstall Windows. To recover your old files, you can hook it up to an eSATA port (I'm assuming it's a SATA disk) or one of these, and hopefully your files will be accessible long enough for you to copy them over to the new installation.

Thank you for the replies any help is very welcome.

As it turns out when I posted this I was on my way to work and I had left my laptop doing a chkdsk in command prompt. When I got back the process had finished and had apparantly fixed a few problems (sorry I cant be more specific, I was tired after a long shift and just wanted my laptop back!). When I rebooted the laptop started up as normal, except that now Windows is very unstable and programs are prone to freezing for long periods of time.

My main concern and question is directed at Skyroket, now that all my data is backed up once I reinstall Windows is the laptop going to be stable? As you said I/O errors can mean a bad HDD but I'm not in a financial position to replace it so anything I can do to prolong the life of the laptop would be great.

Hopefully its just a driver error as Jacee said, I've also read that over a period of time the registry gets messed up, would a Windows reinstall sort this out?

    Cheers for the help
    Tom

    Hello again Tom.

The first thing to try would be an sfc /scan from an elevated command window, have a look at this tutorial at the link below.

Then have a look at this site to find info on your Hard Disk Drive and have a go at their tools.
