Windows 7: Random (so it seems) BSOD

That folder was empty a couple of hours ago. Heh. I just got a BSOD while watching a video on YouTube when Jobes (lol) was demoing the iPhone. Here's the file. By the way, I did not completely follow the instructions on the previous page. I have mine setup for a kernel memory dump, not the 256k dump (or whatever)...if that matters.

wait, hold everything for just a moment, Bill Gates was demoing a iphone?!?!?

...that no doubt caused a reality paradox that crashed your system.

Firstly, remove McAfee as it is a known cause of BSOD on some Win 7 systems. Read this KB article regarding on removing McAfee products: http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

Replace with MSE please: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Uninstall RivaTuner/EVGA Precision/MSI Afterburner as they are a known cause of BSOD with Windows 7 and the timestamp for the driver is way too obsolete to work with Windows 7.

Doing this all from my phone so please excuse format/spelling errors.

I have uninstalled McAfee and installed MSE. Gotta admit it pained me to do that since I renewed my subscription back in January.

I have updated my nVidia drivers.

I have updated and installed the latest version of CoreTemp. It says on their home page it is compatible with Win 7 and Vista. I have the x64 version installed.

I don't know what Riva Tuner or EVGA Precision is. I'll look for those when I get home. I don't use those as far as I know...not sure how it was installed on my machine. MSI Afterburner, however, is a great program I would like to keep. I will look for updates. Are you sure this program is causing my BSODs? I don't overclock my GPU or RAM. Only my CPU.

Lastly, I don't know what RawDisk is, either. I didn't see the location to update a driver. I only saw a spot to purchase and buy it. Could you provide some help with this?

Thanks again for any and all help.

- Dustin

CPU needs to be stop overclocking. Overclocking causes too much BSOD. Many users are getting BSOD from MSI Afterburner.

Go to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers and find ElRawDsk.sys. Rename it to ElRawDsk.BAK and reboot the system - the driver will not load. This will break whatever software this driver is associated with. Then you can update or uninstall that software.

I found the file ElRawDsk.sys to be associated with System Mechanic, which is an AWESOME PC program I might ad. I'll see if I can update it. UPDATE: I haven't found a place to update system mechanic as of yet.

I have updated MSI Afterburner to the latest version which was released 2/15/11. Hopefully this will correct any errors.

MSI Afterburner just causes too much BSOD - even their updated version. Is there any reason on why you use it?

I use it to keep my GPU fan at 75%. Honestly, that's really all I use it for. I can monitor my GPU temp and GPU loads as well. I can also use it to "capture video" and save to a file while I'm playing a game. I haven't used any of the overclocking features for any reason.

If you uninstall MSI Afterburner - does the GPU fan stay at 75%?

No...it's a profile I created in the program to make it stay at 75%.
