    Win7 x64 doesn't load past welcome screen.

    Hi!
Windows 7 all of a sudden stopped working, it would freeze when explorer started and i would have to do a hard shutoff. It now doesn't get past the welcome screen. I have tried startup repair, and used MS Dart Disk and it found no problems with the windows install. I checked my hard drive with multiple tests and it turned out fine. Can boot into safe mode with networking just fine. But cannot boot into windows 7. Even after a fresh install it worked for a while ( < 1hour) then does the same thing. I am assuming it was updates because I did a system restore to before the updates and turned updates off, and it worked correctly. I just finished installing some programs (Avast!, Security Essentials, Foobar 2000, Chrome). And the same issue happened. I once again used the system restore feature and it is working. Any ideas as to what may be causing the problem. Windows hotfix updates? Drivers? Thanks.

For starters you should not run Avast and MSE together. The earlier news that they might run together were later withdrawn.

Next I would disable all startup programs that are not absolutely needed - and that are probably all except the AV program.

Okay well I now only have avast! running, but it seems to break again when i try to do updates. I did a clean install using the OEM HP Windows installer. I think i'm going to try doing clean from the w7 media disk.

    Hi,
    I have similar problem.
My Win 7 x 64 professional can't past welcome screen.
It started to happen last couple of weeks. It works fine.
Next morning I can't past welcome screen.
    safe mode works fine.
I restore to latest restore point (usually before windows update) and it works fine.
Yesterday it happened again, I did the usual restore, and installed latest update.
This morning it happened again, restore solved it.
Any ideas what is the issue w/ windows updates?
