A Challenge!

Hi OK Im having issues with my PC and have been trying everythign to try to sort it out, but ahvin no luck what so ever. Basicly Im getting Bluescreens, System_service_exception and Bad_Pool_Header. Probably caused by : ntoskrnl.exe and atikmdag.sys ( atikmdag+3b684e ). I've reinstalled windows and the latest drivers to everything, and also runb a Memcheck which hasnt found any errors. The problems started when i upgraded my PC adding another 2x2 GB sticks into the 2 empty slots. These where causing me problems when i first got the board, as i installed the RAM in these but they where 2nd slots so i moved the Ram into the correct slots and stoped getting Blue screens. Now i've upgraded to 4 sticks the problem seems to have come back, but i would have though that this would have shown up in the Memcheck, which is what is confussing me so much. Its is rather sporadic as well, such as i managed to run the pc fine for 6 hours last night but it Bluescreens 5 times this morning. Im posting the Dumps if anyone can help it would be much appricated!!! Everything i seem to try just isnt doin it, so im takin out the additional RAM until someone can help

Hi Karl,

Can I suggest you use the folloiwing tutorial to post your BSOD logs here? We have a very experienced team of BSOD analysts that will be able to look at this for you.

Cheers for the reply,

Ive uploaded those files you've requested. Im just after updating the BIOS, then i took the extra RAM out. Haven had a blue screen since, but reinstalled in to run these tests. Im gonna keep it in and see if the new BIOS update makes any difference.
Much appricated the Help. If I can get it sorted it would be mint, 4GB can be pretty constrictive when your workin in 3D.

Hi,

Two BSODs list atikmdag.sys (ATI graphics driver) as the probable cause, the other one blames it on the DirectX driver.

So, we are looking at a graphics issue, either software or hardware. Your graphics driver is up to date, so chances are it's hardware. Please run this stress test: Video Card - Stress Test with Furmark

Also make sure overheating is not an issue.

You do CAD (or other design work)? Do you use color calibration such as Spyder?

cheers reventon,

I looked into this cause before and thats the thing, its bein listed as a issue with the graphics, but the card seems fine, it has a few issues whcih are strange but thsi has been widely reported on the 5770 and hasnt ever caused BSOD even when playin Starcraft 2 at max res and dual monitors, also the BSOD also occured on the onboard graphics. Only when the extra 2 slots for RAM are being used are the crashes being casued, so when i removed the extra 4GB the issues stoped, im guessin this is a faulty board, doesnt really seem like any other possible cause.

I work in Softimage, doing an animation degree, I have used Spyder before on the another install of windows, when i was able to borrow the equipment off a mate but i've reinstalled windows since then and not been intouch with him to borrow it again, so no not at the moment but it is pretty effective at what it does.

After running the tests mentioned by reventon, to rule out the graphics card or sub-system, let's look at the RAM.
I would check the RAM settings before looking for a faulty board.
The memtest86+ tutorial linked below will explain how to test for bad RAM slots.

There is a known issue with AMD CPUs integrated memory controllers having problems running RAM at 1600 MHz and above.

VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING AMD AM3 CPU's and RAM SPEEDS

Quote:
This problem is more noticable if you are trying to run with all 4 memory slots filled on the motherboard but can also apply if you are only using 2 sticks of RAM.
Interesting that 4GB is running with no issues, maybe AMD has sorted this out.

This fact leads me to think it might just need a voltage adjustment.

Best way to test this issue is to change your RAM frequency to 1333MHz, for testing.

Often when running 2GB RAM cards, 4GB RAM or more you need to bump the memory controller voltage.
With the below information, we can try adjusting a few settings.

Have you ran memtest86+?
It is much better than the MS default RAM test.

When you run memtest86+ you are looking for bad RAM cards, bad motherboard slots, so you need to follow the testing procedure in the tutorial.
Sometimes errors from these tests can be corrected by adjusting the settings.
RAM - Test with Memtest86+

Since you have no issues with 2X2GB cards install, do the first memtest86+ with all four cards installed. If you get any errors then stop the test.

If you get errors, re-run the test with the origional 2X2GB cards installed, if you get any errors you can stop the test.
Let us know the results.

Can you download CPUZ and post a snip of the CPU, Mainboard, Memory, and SPD tabs.

For posting the information , enter 'Snipping tool' in the Start button > Search box, hit enter. Select the area you want to post and save to a convenient place.

Have you been checking your temperatures?

Use Speed Fan or Core Temp, run one of these and check the CPU temps when at idle, under load and/or testing.
Let us know the minimum and maximum temps you get.

Go to your BIOS and tell us what the CPU, RAM and VDDNB (CPU integrated memory controller) voltages are.

Just for information, can you give more details on your 'Hard Drives'?
