Persistent and various BSODs

Would appreciate any help that anyone can throw my way. I bought a Dell XPS8100 just about a year ago (yeah, yeah, I know, I know; my wife insisted that it was time to get a new computer for me and that was what we could afford) and it has been giving me blue screen problems almost from the moment I got it. I should have sent it back immediately, but I dealt with it. I have searched high and low for fixes, but nothing seems to do the trick. So, I am turning to the experts here for help.

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OEM (I think I tried re-installing from that discs that Dell sent a couple of months after I got it, but it didn't help at all)

Mini-dumps and other stuff zipped and attached per BSOD instructions. If you need any further information, please ask. Thanks much in advance.

Hi Wayne . . .

You've had 50 BSODs in the last 28 days. Windows 7 only keeps the last 50 mini kernel dumps on hand.

WERCON reports 137 BSODs since 2 November 2010. The bugchecks are all over the map, which is indicative of hardware failure.

One BSOD w/ bugcheck 0x1a (memory management error) listed RAM -

Thank you very much for the incredibly quick reply!

I ran memcheck last night. It ran for about 4 and a half hours and went through 2 complete passes with no errors. If I need to let it run longer or if I really do need to go through the whole one-stick-at-a-time process, please let me know.

I had already tried updating as many drivers as I could, but I will go through what you listed later today and get all of those. I would have sworn that I removed the DaemonTools driver, but maybe it didn't do a complete remove.

I know I bought the computer in March, so I'm pretty sure I am past the one year mark. I did try the whole tech support phone call thing with Dell once before, but that's like banging your head against a brick wall. Either way, you end up with a headache and a computer that still doesn't work. If it's just the RAM, I can replace that easily. If it's the actually slots on the motherboard, then I have bigger problems. I've been putting off the whole testing cycle, because I hate breaking into the box and everything; it's just such a hassle.

You are quite welcome. I just hope there is a [quick] solution for you among the info I posted.

Each RAM stick should be tested separately in each slot. I know 16 tests is tedious, but is necessary.

As for sptd.sys - try disabling via REGEDIT -

- 2x-click on sptd "folder"

Away from my desktop, but I thought I would ask while it's on my mind, otherwise, I'll forget later.

Is one pass through memtest enough for each stick in each slot or should I let the test go for longer? Basically, how much stress testing is enough to ensure that both RAM and slot are fine?

Now I remember why I hate breaking into that damn Dell box. There is no such thing as just "pop out a stick out RAM." No, it's a proprietary case. This is what I had to do.

1. Remove side of case.
2. Remove SATA cable from secondary RAID hard drive.
3. Remove bracket stabilizing monstrously-sized video card.
4. Remove power cable from secondary RAID hard drives, since they wrap over video card.
5. Remove screws holding hard drive.
6. Remove hard drive.
7. Remove screw on outside of case, which secures clip that stabilizes monstrously-sized video card.
8. Remove clip on outside of case.
9. Remove video card, being sure to give it a half-twist while lifting end, since it's about a mile long, otherwise, it will not come out (and it has to come out before I can do anything with RAM, because the push clips that secure the RAM butt right up against the video card; if the card is in the computer, there is no way to push the clips open and thus, remove the RAM).
10. Remove RAM (finally) and marked each according to which slot it is in (1-4).
11. Replace sticks 1 and 2 back where they were; set aside 3 and 4 for later testing.
12. Reverse steps 1-9.
13. Turn on computer and listen to it beep at me.
14. Remember that I had to unplug a power cable from the video card, but did not plug it back in.
15. Curse.
16. Repeat steps 1-9.
17. Plug in video power cable.
18. Repeat step 12.
19. Turn on computer and be thankful that it plays nicely.

So, it is now running on 4G of memory at the moment. We'll see how it plays today and I'll run memtest on it tonight. If all goes well, I'll swap out sticks 1 and 2 for 3 and 4 tomorrow and repeat (except next time I think I'll skip steps 13-18).

Anyhow, just an update. Nothing else new to report just yet.

On a side note, sptd.sys and ElbyCDIO.sys were already removed or disabled in the registry. I had gone through several threads on BSODs and discovered that both of them caused issues with Windows 7, so I had dumped them. You must have spotted those in an earlier mini-dump.

Yes, you're right - I checked dbug logs... sptd & Elby last sighted on 12 March.

Ran computer yesterday with sticks 1 and 2 in slots 1 and 2 with no BSODs. Ran memtest overnight for almost 8 hours. It made it through 8 full passes with no errors, so I think it's safe to say that those sticks and slots are fine. Swapped out for sticks 3 and 4 this afternoon. Unfortunately, the computer didn't seem to like them in slots 3 and 4, so I moved them to slots 1 and 2. I'll run memtest again tonight and see if those sticks pass. Will update again after that.

And sticks 3 and 4 passed memtest also. Almost 7 hours of testing, 7 full passes, 85% into pass 8 and no errors.

Now, so far everything has been in slots 1 and 2. Not sure how I'm going to test the other two slots. I finally found the beep code chart and the two beeps I was getting when I tried sticks 3 and 4 in slots 3 and 4 meant that the computer wasn't finding any RAM. I'll try it again later, but the manual definitely suggests pairs in slots 1 and 2 and then 3 and 4. If all else fails, I'll throw everything back into the computer and let it run all night again and see what that gets me.

If it does start throwing more BSODs, I'll update with the new dumps.
