The best thing is to make frequent images.

How often is up to you - once a week, perhaps.

You are better using a 3rd party imaging app. - because they are much more flexible and the image sizes are much smaller - faster, too.

You could try Macrium Relect ( free ) - it's very efficient.

You only probably need to keep two images - delete earlier ones to save space.

Any major problem - just put back the most recent image, it ddoesn't take long - and you will be where you were when that image was made.

It's not clear to me exactly what you did to cause the issue you just had - so can't specifically advise how to avoid it.
