To change your folder path when opening a command prompt: I'm starting off in system32, OK? You might be different. Red is what you type, Blue is what you get.

C:\Windows\system32>cd C:\

C:\> (notice how it's gone back to C:\ ? Now we build the path up. Keep the space between cd and your next folder name There must be a quicker way, but this works!)

C:\>cd users

C:\Users>

C:\Users>cd ian elsegood

C:\Users\ian elsegood>

C:\Users\ian elsegood>cd desktop

C:\Users\ian elsegood\desktop>

C:\Users\ian elsegood\desktop>cd tdsskiller

C:\Users\ian elsegood\desktop\tdsskiller>

C:\Users\
ian elsegood\desktop\tdsskiller>tdsskiller.exe

i think i can see a problem, i am running the cmd through going into "repair computer" on boot and then command prompt. the problem with this is when i open it it says X:\windows\system32> instead of c:\windows\system32, i think it is this that causes (when i use c:\TDSSKiller.exe) it now gives me a message "The subsystem needed to support the image type is not present" does this mean i need to put tdsskiller into x:?
+i tried copying tdskiller into the x: and running from there and i got the same messgae
so how would i go about getting from x:\windows\system32> to c:\windows\system32>???

That would be a different mode as from Safe Mode.

I wouldn't have thought that would be possible. I would say that the "X" drive would be a theoretical, as opposed to an actual drive.

Possible, if you can see the USB drive when running Safe Mode.

I honestly think that that is what I would be doing. As long as a total clean, as in not a repair, install.
I know that seems a negative answer, but once I couldn't even boot to Safe Mode with networking, I'd be thinking "Game Over".

I've just recently done a total fresh install, after SP1** slowed me to a crawl. Took a total of three days, eliminating "iffy" (kb2286198 & kb980408 in my case) Windows Downloads/Updates, only adding two or three at a time. Installing my "crucial" software and then making a back up with, amongst others, Macrium. At least I know the next time it eventually goes tits up I've got a back up to my "sweet spot" Windows 7.

** Nothing new in SP1 for me, all security updates were installed, I installed in a moment of stupidity.

Game over doesn't sound good. Do you mean the whole computers had it? anyway, I can see USB from safe mode so how would I go about using the intel driver update thing without Internet? The link back on pg1 is in browser search

"Game Over" was not really the best choice of words I made. I meant I'd have given up and I'd be doing a fresh install. I didn't mean that your PC was dead.

Now, if you can download the installer on another PC and put it on your usb, and then you can see the contents of your usb (E:\) in safe mode, you should be able to run it, I don't think it needs internet access to install. I cannot confirm this (I've tried) the software/drivers are not installed on my PC
