Hello millwallgirl and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might try using System Restore and returning your machine to a date/time prior to defrag and updates.

    System Restore

Please post back if you have any problems with SR

Sorry to hear you're having so many issues. Can you get into Safe Mode? When you first power on your machine, immediately start clicking the F8 key (top row of keyboard.) Keep clicking until you get a black screen with white lettering like this:

Use your up/down arrows to highlight Safe Mode and click Enter. Hopefully this will get you to a weird looking screen with the words Safe Mode in each corner. Now you can try doing the System Restore. It's also possible that your machine may have picked up some malware. You could try running a full scan with your antivirus program as well.

What make of netbook do you have? Some manufacturers have a hidden partition on the hard drive that contains a factory image of the computer (like the day it was when it was purchased.) It might be possible to access that and return your machine to "like new". The downside to this is any data stored on the hard drive (photos, documents, programs, etc) would be lost if they haven't been backed up.

Perhaps this HP help site may provide some additional troubleshooting tips. I'd start with the "Resolving Startup and No Boot Checklist". Did your machine come with 7 already installed or was it upgraded? Did HP provide any kind of recovery disks?

If you tap the F6 key during startup, that should invoke the recovery procedure for your HP Mini 110 netbook providing you still have a recovery partition on it.

Failing that you could contact HP for a set of recovery disks.
