Ok, I'll give that a go. Problem is that I ran the latest MBAM version, but it wants to update. I cannot run the update, so not sure the scan will be as useful?

Edit - Found this MBAM manual database update

I have also cleared the Java cache as per these instructions

You can run the update, if this cannot be done in normal mode then try safemode with networking

    Mbam found adware in h:\documents\driverback\rk.bin

It did not find the java exploits that the microsoft tool couldn't remove. These may have been removed by clearing the Java cache.

The machine is now booting up normally with no bsod.

Been up and running for a while now and still no bsod! Thanks all your help!

Have also got KIS 2011 installed now and am planning on running a full scan overnight.
Is it likely to be worth running the Microsoft Tool again?

Still trying to think whether this has happened out of my control of ir I could have prevented it (eg I think there are old Java versions still installed).

    Still no bosd.

Any other action I should take?

I have one program not behaving. Thought it was being blocked by KIS 2011 (as I recall having to add it to the exceptions in KIS 2010) but what ever I do I cannot get it to run properly. Most icons are not visible and most text isn't either. If I run it in the Kaspersky safe run mode, it displays fine, but shows an old version of the program on the splash screen and can't open files as they were created with the newer version!
