Hi noguru and welcome to SF

All your 14 crashes are for identical reasons:
Code:
DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE (9f)
(a device driver is left in an inconsistent power state)
and are ultimately blamed on
Code:
mausbmp.sys Mon Feb 09 12:37:16 2009 (499069CC)
(belonging to M-Audio USB MIDI Series)
What did you install before the first crash occurred (05/22) ?
You could try to find a working M-Audio driver here: M-AUDIO - Drivers and Software Search
I see a lot of problem devices in your report
try having a look in the device manager look for any yellow ! or red x and check the manufacturer's pages for updated drivers or uninstall those problem devices altogether.

If that doesn't help, report back and we'll check further

As your computer is three years old, did you check for any hardware/software compatibility issues with Windows 7 before you installed the new operating system?

2-3year old HPs (like mine) came with Vista. So the hardware should be compatible. Looking at your startup folder makes me think you did an upgrade install instead of a clean install. So chances are what we're dealing with are leftovers from the old Vista installation.

sledgedg: do you recommend going wih option 3? can i still safely do a clean install (with win 7 upgrade) even though the upgrade has obviously been done? any cautions other than pending updates?

AFAIK you can do an "upgrade" to the same version you have already installed.
Cautions like always before major changes: Do a backup so you can restore everything in case s/th goes wrong (Murky's Law, ya know I recommend for that purpose this soft over Windows own :

originally upgraded vista to win7 (not retail version). just tried redo of upgrade and got report that current version of win7 was newer than version to be installed. not sure about doing custom install since that would not keep files, settings, or programs.

If you follow the clean instructions here you will find your old data in a folder named Windows.old Custom Install Windows 7
Of course you'll have to re install all your programs and drivers. I don't think there is an easier or more convenient way.
