Black screen and system recovery loop

    Hello everyone,
To be honest I don't know anything about computers. Now that we have that out of the way...
Recently, and unexpectedly my computer stopped booting. It would reach the "Windows is starting..." screen, go black, show my mouse, and then load up System Recovery. I let SR run all night and the following day while I was at work but by the time I got back it was still running and nothing had happened. I ended up borrowing a restore disk and tried all the options available but I was told there were no restore points and no image could be found. I even went into the HP restore settings which had backup, check drives, and restore factory settings. Well, backup had been disabled, and the check drives option let me into a sub menu but I couldn't really check anything. Then I tried to restore to factory settings, after that started up I had an error I can't remember that had something to do with visual c++.
Since I went through every option possible it seemed, I thought getting a copy of Windows 7 to reinstall would somehow be the cure. My laptop came with the OS pre-loaded and without the install DVD I went out and bought a copy of Win7. Loaded it up, and got to the part where I select a partition to install to and I get this error:

"Windows could not format a partition on disk 0. The error occured while preparing the partition selected for installation. Error code: 0x80070057"

Not really sure what to do at this point.

Went out and bought a new hard drive. Currently running the install and it appears to work just fine.
