well the only hardware that is easy to test is hdd and ram.
HDD manufacturers have their testing tools on their sites
and
RAM - Test with Memtest86+
for memtest.
Only two things that are pretty easy to test with software.

Re-installed windows and everything is running back to normal.

Was using Avast free version for AV, any other recommendations?

I've found the most stable combination to be MSE , manual scanning with the free malwarebytes once a week or on demand. It's also completely free.
Anti-Malware, Virus, Spyware Protection | Microsoft Security Essentials
Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a free download that removes viruses and malware from your computer

There are several pay softwares that are much more robust than that combo, but they are
a - not free
b - not as stable in general
I would personally stay away from Norton or AVAST with win 7 though I just see too many people getting problems from them on the forums here.
