Windows 7: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR1

Sorry

Sorry Writhziden and everybody else who read my initial post.

Today the errors came back in full force with 21 ATAPI 11's in a row

There are three errors/warning that show up regularly in my Event Viewer with Windows 7. Which are ACPI (ID 13), ATAPI (ID 11), and Kernel-Processor-Power (ID 37).

What strikes me as strange is that there are so many people with different computers who have them with Windows 7, but from what I have found there seems to be no definite solutions to the issues. One would think that the computer manufacturers or Microsoft would come up with some fixes.

Thanks,
Laurus

Check whether the hard disk is physically connected to the motherboard properly. To do so:
  • Shut down and turn off the computer
  • Remove the AC Adapter
  • Remove the battery
  • Hold down the power button for 15-30 seconds to close the circuit and drain any residual power
  • Remove the panel on the underside of the laptop where the hard disk is housed
  • Remove and re-insert the hard disk by sliding it away from the connector and then gently but firmly pressing it back into the connector (no screws should need to be removed to do this step)
  • Replace the panel on the underside of the laptop to cover the hard disk
  • Replace the battery
  • Replace the AC Adapter
  • Turn on the computer and see how it responds
Sometimes these problems can occur due to a loose connection.

Additionally, do you have any 3rd party backup software? Are there any pending backups through 3rd party backup software or through Windows Backup and Restore? Backup User and System Files

Again thank you very much Writhziden.

I have done all that you told. I'll let it run for a couple of days before I tell how it goes.

Hello again Writhziden

Since early yesterday until now I've had 69 ATAPI errors. So unfortunately removing the hard drive and reinserting it did not work. I have also tried a full surface scan with WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostics, and it did not find any bad sectors either.

If not some kind of broken Windows configuration that I do not know of, I am starting to suspect that there is actually something wrong with the controller itself. Hmm...

Again thanks for your help and suggestions.

I have the same problem I think. I have an ACER Aspire 1810T Notebook. When I plug in a brand new 2.5" external USB HD (1TB Samsung) I get "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR1." in my event viewer.

The laptop works fine otherwise including other USB HD's. And if I plug in the 1TB Samsung USB HD into another laptop like my Thinkpad it works fine too.

Any ideas? I upgraded the BIOS in my ACER but that did nothing. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit.

I figured out my problem. It was the USB drive enclosure. If I replace the enclosure the drive works in the ACER now. Very strange.

kenw232: Probably a driver issue with your other enclosure.

Laurus12: Is there a possibility yours could be external drive related?

Would it be possible to get an image if your disk management? Start Menu -> Right click Computer -> Manage -> Disk Management (from the list on the left). Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums

Hello Writhziden,

No, I do not have any external drives. Though I have wished for one the last couple of weeks

Yesterday morning I changed my bios back to the previous version and I have not had any ATAPI errors since. I have done all the things that I usually do, with multitasking also. So I am pretty sure that I have have found the cause.

My computer is a Dell Studio 1555 where I rolled back from bios version A13 to A12. I still have ACPI errors and Kernel Processor Power warnings though. Anyhow it makes me think that Dell should have done a better job here.

Thanks,
Laurus

ATAPI Errors solved

I would just like to notify that I have solved my ATAPI errors promblem by installing the SATA AHCI drivers included in the Intel ""RST and AHCI Driver and GUI" driver package. It can be found by a search here: Intel Download Center . The SATA AHCI driver is located in the \Drivers\f6flpy-x64 or \f6flpy-x86 folders . Use device manager to update. After updating restart computer. When restarted Windows will reinstall drivers for the harddrive(s). Another restart is required.

As mentioned, I have had no errors since and my computer is working smoother than ever.
