Random shutdowns, BSoD error, only when using Steam

I have a brand new HP Pavilion DV6-3141ea, only received it yesterday. I installed various programs, like Google Chrome, Live Messenger, Skype, Avast! and ZoneAlarm. I then installed Steam, and began downloading a game - now, every so often, the laptop just resets completely randomly. Sometimes, it will just crash and freeze, no mouse movement, no task manager, no nothing. What confuses me is that it only seems to happen when I have Steam running, and the game downloading. I've not got it running right now, and so far everything's ok. Can anyone help me shed any light on this?

When Windows restarts, I get an error message: Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown. The problem details are as follows:

Code:
Problem signature:
  Problem Event Name:	BlueScreen
  OS Version:	6.1.7600.2.0.0.768.3
  Locale ID:	2057

  BCP4:	FFFFF880045DCCA0
  OS Version:	6_1_7600

Can you please zip and attach the contents of your c:\windows\minidump folder?

It's been creating minidumps apparently I can see it in the event snippet you included.

Well this is embarrassing after having you go to that trouble it spits out a debug profile I have never seen before.
Appears to be a driver issue on the surface but I can't trace it.

The fact that you have both AVAST! and Zone alarm is kind of ... alarming though.
I don't think the two work very well together, and could conceivably be causing this strange irq debug I'm seeing.

Code:
IRQL_GT_ZERO_AT_SYSTEM_SERVICE (4a)
Returning to usermode from a system call at an IRQL > PASSIVE_LEVEL.
Arguments:
Arg1: 0000000074ce2dd9, Address of system function (system call routine)
Arg2: 0000000000000002, Current IRQL
Arg3: 0000000000000000, 0
Arg4: fffff8800449fca0, 0

They don't work well together? o.0 I've used the two of them together on various machines in the past and I've never had any problems at all - seemed to be by far the best combination out of any I tried. :/

It's been a while since it's happened - I ran a few more updates and finished my download, without running anything else this time. Maybe one of the updates fixed whatever the problem was. I'll post again if it crashes again.

To be perfectly honest I see avast causing win 7 bsod's here on a nearly daily basis.

It obviously doesn't affect everyone, but it does have problems in windows 7 on some systems.

If it's a possibility, then I'll change it. I'm still getting occasional crashes, and it's driving me mad. What would you suggest is a good antivirus to use with 7? AVG perhaps?

AVG could work, MSE with mbam for manual scans works as a low system req alternative. Though not as secure as a full proper suite.
It probably wouldn't kill you just to run without an AV for a couple of hours while you test to see if removing it helps.

Good point. I've disabled all the shields for Avast, so it's not doing anything now. I tried to actually stop the program but it's not letting me. _ I'll see how I go now.
