Welcome screen hang and 15+ min login

    Hello all,

Apologies for another welcome screen crash topic but i've done a search through the site and can't find any other topics with the specific problems i've been having.

I've had my laptop for little over 2 months or so and i've been very careful not to fill it with crap and take care of it, regularly using Ccleaner etc.

Yesterday after installing Sky Broadband I accidently pulled the charger out of the laptop and because I run it through the mains it turned off. When I turned it on again I "started windows normally" and was told to perform a diskcheck which I did. After entering my password I got a hang on the "Welcome" screen. The scrolling wheel was still spinning but I gave it a good 15 mins before forcing a shut down through the power button. I then started it again and shut it down via Safe Mode which worked fine. Since then I've performed another disk check and done a system restore to last week but still get a 15/20 min hang on the "Welcome" screen.

Upon one of my attempted bootups in the last 12 hours i've got a load of bubble icons in the corner saying some of my startup programs were corrupt (googleupdate.exe, chrome.exe) and whilst trying to delete the Sky Broadband icon from my desktop I was also told that was corrupt too.

I've run out of options now after doing the system restore and not sure what to do anymore. Has anyone got anymore info or insight into what the problem could be? Have I screwed my HD?

    Thanks
    Graham

It does sound like your hdd has suffered some.
are you familiar with safe mode?
    Safe Mode

The first thing I'd like you to try here is starting in safe mode and following the procedure laid out here
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

    Hi Maguscreed,

Thanks for the quick reply, I have just tried this technique and the scan didn't find any problems and i'm still getting the hang on the welcome screen. I really don't understand it because the computer runs like a dream once i've got past the welcome screen so it's like it's struggling to load the startup programs and initial boot to the desktop.

Do you have any more ideas at all mate?

Well it's apparently a startup item that is causing your problem. You can disable startup items through msconfig.
It's a tad more tricky than just running a command though.

Are you at all familiar with msconfig?
I don't have a tutorial link handy for that one.

yeah i'm familiar with msconfig. i've had a poke around on it and disabled some things that were on the startup section and set it to load a selective startup. i'll give it a restart and see what happens and report back...!

Just for the record you should be able to completely remove everything in the startup tab and still boot.
Just don't go messing with the services or boot tabs.
If we're going to pick this out as a startup item problem, it's best that you go ahead and disable them all for the moment.

Right, I disabled all the items in the startup tab and restarted and have been confronted with a black screen with a cursor on it before reaching the login screen. Where do I go from here?! Having to type this on my phone lol!

sorry, bit of an update! just after i posted that reply it loaded the login screen and after entering my password I only had a 1 min or so wait on the welcome screen before i reached the desktop. What could it mean if I had a black screen before login for 10 mins?

    thanks

Some piece of software you have installed is obviously messing with the startup procedures.
The only other thought is the disk is still suffering negative effects from that hard shutdown.
I believe you said a disk check had already been performed though.

There is a more detailed way to directly trace startup problems but it's not really my area of expertise.
You may want to have a look at the error logs
right click my computer - manage - event viewer - windows logs

And see what is hanging/crashing when you are restarting there.

    Hi again Maguscreed,

I've been keeping an eye on the event logs under "System" for the past 24 hours or so as i've been turning my laptop on and off.

I seem to be experiencing a couple of errors when i turn the computer on. Today for example, i turned my laptop on at 13:07:31pm and it's all fine until 13:09:47 when I get an error in the Service Control Manager saying "The Group Policy Client service hung on starting".

This is then followed by another error at 13:16:52 pm from Eventlog saying "The event logging service encountered an error (res=1117) while initializing logging resources for channel Microsoft-Windows-WLAN-AutoConfig/Operational.".

After these two errors the logging goes back to normal as my computer eventually started up!

The difference in time between errors shows how long startup is hanging for but do you have any idea what these errors mean and how they could be corrected?

    Thanks!
