BSOD playing games, newly built computer

    Greetings,

I am experiencing BSOD crashes intermittently when launching and playing Rift. It has also crashed once while surfing the net.

    Computer specs:

    ASUS M4A87TD EVO
    AMD Phenom II X4 955
    Sapphire Radeon HD 69870
    Corsair GS700 (700watt PSU)
    2x2GB GSkill Ripjaw DDR3 1600Mhz

I have a 80GB SATA HD and a 180GB IDE HD I use for storage. Both of these hard drives were used on my old setup, however when reinstalling windows, I reformatted the 80GB completely.

Retail Windows 7 x64 Ultimate (installed 2 days ago)

I have run MemTest86+ on both slots with both sticks through 7+ passes with no errors whatsoever.

I have used DriverSweep to clean up drivers, the sweep uninstalled my ATI drivers which i reinstalled from the website.

Attached is the dump analysis and performance analysis.

Your Help is greatly appreciated!! If any other information / tests is needed I am standing by!

    Best Regards,

    Brian

    Brian Hi and welcome

These were Related to Rt64win7.sys 8101E/8168/8169 NDIS 6.20 64-bit Driver from Realtek Corporation. I would re-install with the newest available as yours is over a year old.

    zigzag,

Thanks for the reply. I updated the driver, although it is still old.. I suppose there is simply not a newer one. While booting into safe mode and normal the computer BSOD a few times. This is a new symptom. I have a hunch this motherboard may just be bad... Would you consider this a possibility?

I will update with new dump reports in a few minutes.

    Update:

I completely Re-Installed Windows on a brand new WD Caviar Blue HDD, disconnecting and removing the other drives.

First I downloaded latest Realtek LAN driver from asus website.

Second, Downloaded latest ATI Radeon GPU Driver from website.

Then, I install rift and begin the 9GB update/patch process, the computer BSOD's 2 mintues in..

The attached file is the Minidump

I have a suspicion the network driver may be causing problems, and I had a PCI network card laying around, but unfortunately it is not Win 7 Compatible.

    Your help is greatly appreciated!

This crash was caused by memory corruption. Probably from a driver (rift?)

Memory corruption probably caused by a driver. please run these two tests

    1-Memtest.

*Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program.

*Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

    RAM - Test with Memtest86+

    2-Driver verifier

I'd suggest that you first backup your data and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Win7 Startup Repair feature).

In Windows 7 you can make a Startup Repair disk by going to Start....All Programs...Maintenance...Create a System Repair Disc - with Windows Vista you'll have to use your installation disk or the "Repair your computer" option at the top of the Safe Mode menu .

    Then, here's the procedure:
    - Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
    - Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
    - Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
    - Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
    - Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
    - Select "Finish" on the next page.

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen. Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly. The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out. If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for at least 36 hours of continuous operation (an estimate on my part).

If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from your installation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that you created.

    Zigzag,

Memtest86+ has been run, 10 passes on first stick / first slot, 7 passes second stick / second slot. No errors.

I followed the steps for the Driver Verifier Procedure. Booted to normal mode and began patching/updating rift as this seems to crash the computer and it says to do what crashes it.

After about 5 mins, it BSOD, i rebooted to normal mode, and it BSOD again after about 30 seconds of loading desktop. Booted to normal mode again, the screen was in a lower resolution and an error appeared, saying the ATI driver was not functioning properly and to re-install it. While navigating to the minidump analysis program, it BSOD again.

I am not sure the end goal of the driver verifier test... I booted to safe mode, ran the minidump analysis, it is attached. I am currently in Safe Mode with networking posting this..

No crashes so far in safe mode with networking. I may try to run rift from here. Will report updates.

I really do appreciate your help zigzag, I think we are close to fixing this or being confident there is a hardware/compatibility problem.

    Best Regards,

    Brian

Update: The computer BSOD while attempting to download/patch rift in safe mode with networking. It also BSOD while surfing the web in safe mode w/ networking. The computer has yet to crash in normal safe mode, does this indicate a LAN device driver problem?
