I don't think that's it, it did read the memtest disc without any problems.

I booted from the memtest cd, I downloaded the file for that from the link provided above by theog.
Just as you can swap optical drives for test purposes,
you can swap drives, for test purposes.
Ask your friendly computer store to swap the drive with another one, just for test purposes.
Did your drive in you computer make any noise?
If you have a tech-savvy friend, he/she can take your drive and stick it in their laptop and see if they can access it and then the can take their drive and put it in your laptop and see if it can be accessed.
This is all rather simple, just a couple of screws, pulling the drive out and inserting another.
Of course, maybe I think the operation is simple because I've done such numerous times.
I work for bestbuy, so I do work around geek squad and have picked up a good many tricks from them, so it is not something very difficult for me. The only issue I'm currently having is one of the screws in the drive is reluctant to come out, but it is making some noise when i turn on the computer.
If the screw is reluctant to come out, then you are probably trying to turn the wrong screw.
Normally, I would never in my life recommend anyone to go to the geek squad, but since you work at bestbuy, then you should be able to get one of them to remove your drive for you and swap another in and to test your hard drive in another laptop. Should be a piece of cake for them.
It happens to be the only screw there. Thanks for your help.
Karlsnooks, you are genius.
Thanks so much for all your information.
Wish you all the best
PLS HELP!! I have read the posts between Karl & Leann, my Toshiba C655-S5132 is doing the EXACT same thing! I have searched and tried for hours and hours.... did ALL steps below, and then some.... system will not pull up/boot anything from the CD... still goes to black screen with blinking cursor at top left... then goes to 'startup repair' which I think is the actual virus... cuz keeps running over and over and will not let me do ANYTHING else! :-( Please help me fix! Thank you!
Can you get to the BIOS? What about Advanced Boot Options?
