Every restart: "windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown"

Problem laptop: Compaq Presario F767NR, AMD Turion64-X2 TL-60, 2GB RAM, w/ nVidia 7000M graphics, purchased summer 2008. Came with Vista installed.

W7 Home Premium 32 bit installed 16 months ago w/ no issues until now.

Every time it's restarted the error message "windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown" appears. The same message shows up at random with no discernible pattern when it's shut down.

Dump files and health report attached.

    Hi TVeblen,

It's pointing to Classpnp.sys which may be corrupted please run a chkdsk /r on the volume and see if the volume has bad sectors.

    KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000008e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
    happening.
    Arguments:
Arg1: c0000005, The exception code that was not handled
Arg2: 88bdf3bc, The address that the exception occurred at
    Arg3: 8ab93a1c, Trap Frame
    Arg4: 00000000

    Debugging Details:
    ------------------

EXCEPTION_CODE: (NTSTATUS) 0xc0000005 - The instruction at 0x%08lx referenced memory at 0x%08lx. The memory could not be %s.

Since classpnp.sys is a system driver, I would do an additional sfc /scannow

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

    -DG

Hi guys. Thank you very much for looking.

I will have her run those tests soon. I'll post back what we find.
At least now I know what we are dealing with.
    Very helpful.

    An update.
I had her run both tests and both came out clean.

However, about a week ago I had her disable the optical drive in Device Manager and after doing so she has not had a single shutdown issue or any other error message.

The optical drive had stopped working (reading disks) back in late August. I am convinced it is a hardware failure and needs replacement (long story, but I did check all the usual suspects on the OS side of the equation, including Upperfilters).

So can I conclude from this that the optical drive was the cause. Does that make sense with a classpnp.sys error?
