BSOD when I installed nvidia Driver and most times when rebooting

Other than that, things are not too bad.

Per the instructions I read here is some background. I started fixing computers for the Navy in 1968 and got my BSEE in 84. All of that experience revolves around real time controllers (for instance while in the Navy fixing the computer that dropped the bombs on the bad guys, to currently the computer that controls the engine on the cars my company manufactures). So while I am reasonably familiar with how the hardware works and the rudiments of the software, Windows 98 was a mystery to me, and every release since has gotten more mysterious. My hat is tipped to you Windows Wizards.

I am currently running Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit OEM Builders pack on my machine, one where I played systems integrator. Presumably you have all the gory details about it in the attached. It's about 6 months old and I have been plagued with system crashes ever since first power up. Initially the system ran fine with the default video driver Win 7 provided for my Galaxy GeForce 8400GS. The minute I installed the nVidia driver, windows stopped. I have reinstalled Win 7 more times than I remember, and have 27 dmp files to prove it plus the previous ones I deleted. I have exchanged every single bit of hardware at least once, and the video card 3 times. I have used two different versions of the nVidia driver 275.33 and currently 280.26. After the last video card replacement, I accidently discovered that when booting, if I let Windows cycle through bsod's anywhere from 0 to 5 times (when it gets the error, let it restart until Windows does it's thing), Windows does something truely miraculous and the video subsystem works pretty good until I shut it down and reboot. I haven't over clocked anything, or adjusted any settings. I don't know what Windows does to fix it, I just get a popup that says Windows fixed it but neither "it" nor the fix are specified. It also offers some "troubleshooting the issue" help. I took that once, but it resulted in a circle of can't find it or resolve it, then rebooting and going through all that again. Whatever I change, it doesn't seem to matter on any level that I can discern, it always comes down to this:with the default driver I can run for weeks with no issues until the minute I install the nVidia driver. I can reinstall the O/S and the minute I install the nVidia driver, all of the above happens instantaneously and continuosly. In fact, until I stumbled on Win 7 can resolve it for this power on cycle only, I had to reinstall Win7 to get it to work. So what is causing the issue is fairly clear albeit lacking a detailed root cause, it's why and what to do about it that isn't so clear, and why I am seeking help. Especially since I am looking for it, I am finding people all over the place with bsod's involving nvlddmkm.sys although my particular circumstances of having trouble at bootup seems to be pretty singular compared to most others I've seen. They seem to be centered around problems while gaming. Galaxy won't answers my emails anymore, and I just discovered nVidia's forums where I will go through all of this again.

Virtually identical these all were caused by your dxgkrnl.sys.

"It's not a true crash, in the sense that the bluescreen was initiated only because the combination of video driver and video hardware was being unresponsive, and not because of any synchronous processing exception".

Since Vista, the "Timeout Detection and Recovery" (TDR) components of the OS video subsystem have been capable of doing some truly impressive things to try to recover from issues which would have caused earlier OSs like XP to crash.

As a last resort, the TDR subsystem sends the video driver a "please restart yourself now!" command and waits a few seconds.

If there's no response, the OS concludes that the video driver/hardware combo has truly collapsed in a heap, and it fires off that stop 0x116 BSOD.

If playing with video driver versions hasn't helped, make sure the box is not overheating.

Try removing a side panel and aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU.

Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference.

If so, it might be as simple as dust buildup and subsequently inadequate cooling.

I would download cpu-z and gpu-z (both free) and keep an eye on the video temps Let us know if you need help STOP 0x116: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR troubleshooting

Thanks for your prompt response and explanantion.

It figures, the one piece of hardware I didn't identify. I have a Coolermaster x90 mid tower with 4 fans on the front, bottom and side sucking air in, and 3 fans on the back and top blowing air out per mfr suggestion, to prevent that very thing. There is no dust as the system hasn't had time to accumulate any and I keep on top of that besides.

If it were heat related why would the system halt immediately, then boot up after 1 or 2 or 3 attempts as you describe? That seems backwards to me, but then I've seen a lot of stranger stuff. But that explanation does fit the other scenarios where people are getting bsod after a while of gaming.

Even so I will get that free software and monitor the temps, even though it seems counter intuitive to me.

Do you have a short version of what dxgkrnl.sys does? You imply it's directly involved, I would like a little more direct connection. I want to be sure about what is happening.

If you don't mind, I will use portions of your explanation at nVidia because that seems to get closer to the root cause. To me it looks like a flat incompatibility between the driver and the card. That's important info to have to get to the bottom of this. I wasn't sure of the interactions between the O/S and the video. Per your explanation it seems clearer to me now that the O/S is reacting to the lack of response in the video subsystem, which puts the onus on the video guys, ie nVidia and Galaxy.

    Thanks

The heat issue, if in fact it is an issue in my case, I would suspect is a different layer of this onion, and not directly connected to the driver/card non-response to the system.

DXkrnl.sys is the DirectX kernal for the video card/driver. Sometimes re-installing directX will help, often it is just a symptom of the card going south.

It is related to the video subsystem. Could be heat, power, VRAM, the card itself, or the mobo. Usually the best place to start is the re-install of direct X

ok Clicked the link, ran the file verses download and run. Got a DirectX Setup popup that says "An internal system error occurred. Please refer to DXError.log and DirectX.log in your windows folder to determine Problem." I don't see a DXError.log file and below is a copy of the other log file. I don't see any evidence of a failure unless no confirmation of a sucessful install is a failure indication or there should be more than whats there. It just looks like it installed a bunch of inf and dll files. Which is probably why I should stick with real time controllers.

After the so-called failed attempt to refresh the DirectX Kernel, I rebooted the system. It took abput 8 tries this time to get it to boot completely, where it's rarely gone to 5 previously. So I went through the process of running the post files instructions so here's the dmp files and perfmon report, on the odd chance something changed. UNless you guys got something compelling, I am going to turn my focus to nVidia armed with this new info, and also see if I can get Galaxy to respond again.

Please review teh attached and give me your summary, even though it probably hasn't changed anything.

    Thanks
    Chuck
