start issue

the last two days when i boot the desktop it hangs on the bios menu window. i have to power down again and on powering up again it will boot as usual. slightly concerning as i dont want to find that it wont get past the hang another time. im dual booting win8 dev. but that hasnt been an issue before

ok ,that sound tricky to do. dont let the guru badge fool you i need steps howto!

edit; i just rebooted to see if it had the same issue and it was fine, possibly because it was already warmed up ,not sure ,i think before i tamper too much i will wait until tomorrow morning and see if the hang repeats itself.

in the meantime anyone any ideas as to what could cause this,or is it too grey an area, is it possible to find out via event viewer etc.

update,
this morning it hung again however i got the boot menu to open and for some reason one of my externals was first in the list ,so i have changed it and we shall see if all is well tomorrow. no point rebooting now as it wont be a true test.

In disk management has any partition on your external been accidentally marked as active, that could be the issue.

here is a screenie ,notably it says active on the "one touch" cant say i know if it has always been like that ,

what do you reccomend?

It shouldn't really be marked active if its only used for data back-up but also shouldn't make that much difference.Your 100MB partition is marked active so that should be booting disk "0". Best bet before marking as inactive would be to remove that drive,re-boot to make sure windows boots fine and the boot files haven't been accidentally put onto disk "2" ,then add the drive back and mark as inactive.

Ok thanks danny, im not sure i will get a true test on the boot as yesterday after the system was running i rebooted and it started normally ,its almost as if because the system has been warmed up it will boot as it should, i will try it and then probably tomorrow morning on a fresh boot will be the true test.

I sometimes get the same sort of thing with the bios hanging on my wife's laptop and it turned out to be her usb modem.I think sometimes the usb attached devices can get in the way a bit at boot.

Ok, i removed the one touch ,reebooted fine no probs, plugged one touch back in set it as inactive reebooted, hang on starting windows screen, powered down started ,prompted to startup repair, did that reboots fine .....so far.

have to re-do the icons i had on some of my folders now, doh!
