Unmountable_boot_volume, computer won't boot

I've gotten this BSOD a while ago and I can't figure it out...
It's for windows xp, not 7. I hope that's okay. :S

- x86 (32-bit) or x64 ? x86
- the original installed OS on the system? XP
- an OEM or full retail version? FRV
- OEM = came pre-installed on system
- Full Retail = you purchased it from retailer

- What is the age of system (hardware)? about 5 years :P
- What is the age of OS installation (have you re-installed the OS?) No.

The BSOD Unmountable_boot_volume comes up whenever I try to boot. The Safe mode doesn't work. It brings up the bsod after the Safe Mode boots.

Help pl0x.

Windows 7 - Vista

It may be the HDD itself.

Run HDD diagnostics - SeaTools (for DOS) -

Burn ISO to CD with ImgBurn -

Boot with SeaTools CD; run LONG test.

Replace/ borrow another CD drive and install it to run the tests.

Or connect the HDD as a slave to another system and run tests.

BSOD on boot, unmountable_boot_volume
I'll make it long story short. I had turned off some unnecessary things in msconfig like some of the pre-loaded vaio software that I never used, but realized I had turned off the service that allows me to change the volume, brightness, I turned that back on in msconfig, and restarted. ...
