I'm pretty sure we got him handled between the two of us.
I think it was primarily a bad graphics driver that came with the system.
The comments on hp's site where I located the updated driver were full of comments about it giving people weird problems.

Bad news: Just had another BSOD. Added the dump file as an attachment. Any ideas?

EDIT: In addition to the dumpfile; I was working in firefox (email, reading pdf, general surfing) and using voip for several hours without any problems, then tried youtube.com and within minutes I got the BSOD. After restart I tried to go to youtube.com immediately and indeed within several minutes another BSOD. Both dumpfiles give the same error (DirectX). What could this error be, since DirectX was just reinstalled? Also dxdiag shows no errors, for what that's worth.

Guys, do you think a total system recovery (there is a HP recovery partition) would solve the problem? Tomorrow my studies start again and I'll need a laptop that I can count on... But if recovery won't solve it (after all the problem was there from the beginning, the recovered system is in principle exactly the same as back then), it will be even worse as I will have to reinstall all programs.

But if you have any other suggestions I am glad to try them first!

    Try the newer driver
    NVIDIA DRIVERS 285.62 WHQL
Run SFC SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
A complete reinstall might fix it

thanks for you help yowanvista. the system file checker indicated that it found several errors in windows files and that it had succesfully repaired them, but this did not solve the problem.

The nVidia driver would not install (it indicated that it was unsuitable for my hardware configuration). In the end I did a full system recovery, which solved the problem.

Well, I guess I was happy too soon. The problem was not solved by the full recovery, will call HP again and have them look at it.

et123, I'm curious to know if you found a resolution to this issue. Our company just purchased a set of 8560w laptops, all of which seem to be having BSOD issues.

I don't think he did, that may be my fault I lost track of this thread.

If you could upload a dump file from one of the laptop's c:\windows\minidump folder (you'll need to zip before attaching to post)
I'll have a look at it in the debugger, at least I can tell you if it's the same problem.

Hey guys, first of all I'm very sorry I didn't update the thread. Completely forgot about it to be honest.

In the mean time a lot has happened. I'll give you guys a small overview. For the conclusion just skip to the last paragraph.

After I ran all the tests and reinstalls without success HP told me that it must be a problem with the motherboard. So they send a technician to me to replace the motherboard. I had to wait about 4 weeks for this, because the part was not in stock. He replaced the motherboard and wanted to test the laptop but it didn't work at all anymore.

Because another motherboard was not in stock HP gave me a laptop to borrow and I had to wait another six weeks for the new faulty motherboard to be replaced. After six weeks the technician came again, but this time the motherboard he brought was slightly different from the one I needed (some of the plastic clips were too long), so it didn't fit.

Since another motherboard was not in stock HP finally decided to give me a new laptop. After about two weeks the new laptop arrived, but the touchpad was broken, so it had to be send back. Because they didn't have any other laptops in stock the touchpad and keyboard were replaced and the laptop was send back to me. After a day of usage the same BSOD problem emerged.

I contacted HP and they started to research to problem again for me. After a couple of days they called me back to tell me that the problem might be with the firewall or anti-virus software. They advised me to un-install both and use the Microsoft Security Essentials program that can be downloaded via Windows Update. I tried this and it immediately solved the problem. HP told me later that apparently on certain hardware configurations Windows 7 64-bit is unable to work together with some firewall or anti-virus programs. It wants to access the same part of the memory at the same time and that causes a BSOD. I have used several combination of anti-virus/firewall software during the BSOD problem. Some or all of the following programs might have caused the problem: AVG Anti-Virus, Comodo firewall, Zonelabs firewall, AdAware or Avast Anti-Virus. Quite a lot of students at my university have the 8560w and I have not yet found one that had the same problem. I have seen people use AVG and McAfee successfully, but according to HP the problem might be different from laptop to laptop, depending on the exact hardware that was put into it.

I hope this helps you. The whole process, from buying to getting the laptop working, cost me about 5 months (October to February). As a first test I would advise to un-install all anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall software and see if that solves the problem.

    Goodluck!
