Yes I did that. My windows srive is f. My partitioned system drive is x. I tried f f, f x, x f and x x. Neither worked.I even double checked it with that disk part tool.

Recovery environment = command line in startup repair?
I am not near pc ATM, but the error was something about windows shell protector protection shell not being able to ru the program. I can give you exact error once I'm at home

In step 5 of tutorial you see the drive letter to use
    sfc /scannow /offbootdir=f:\ /offwindir=f:\windows
    send me the error message

Windows resource protection could not start the repair service

    Edit

After rebooting it gave me this error when I typed that

X:\windows\temp\SSS_5dd85de01fa4cc010100000084012001\wcp.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error.

try the sfc command again. I think you run it from "recovery environment" on harddisk using F8. Am i right? I did the same thing and it fails as well with "Windows resource protection could not start the repair service"

run sfc from dvd!! from a repair disk or installation dvd

    What I did
Insert disk. Go to bios, set cd as primary boot. Save and reboot.
Press any key to boot from cd. Done.
Large window asking to select language. Done.
Large window asking if I want to install or repair. Repair. Choose the system - I choose it. It does auto repair and fails. I choose advanced options. Next choose command line.
My command line is x:/ with x being the system partitioned part of my windows hard drive. The cd drive is G, the windows drive is F.
I run the sfc command using F and F as parameters. I get same error. I type it again. This time I get just the resource protection message.
When I substitute F for X and G, in any order, result stays the same.

    sfc /scannow /offbootdir=f:\ /offwindir=f:\windows
    sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows
    sfc /scannow /offbootdir=d:\ /offwindir=d:\windows
    sfc /scannow /offbootdir=e:\ /offwindir=e:\windows

they all fail with same error? Very strange that sfc fails to run

I'm afraid not, only the official oem windows install disk that came with the pc. I really should have known better, i know

The sfc program itself is recognised - I cangwt a help file with command list etc. When I try to submit the partition drive x as offwindir it tells me that it's not an offline directory, but online. When I try to submit it with f ( windows drive) as either both of arguments, or as offwindir, I get the long "not designed to run" error that I wrote a few answers above

Also, when try to run just sfc /scannow, I get the "there is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart windows and ru sfc again". Granted, none of the restarts fixed that

    sfc /scannow /offbootdir=f:\ /offwindir=f:\windows
    sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows

    sfc /scannow /offbootdir=d:\ /offwindir=d:\windows
    sfc /scannow /offbootdir=e:\ /offwindir=e:\windows

    all fail?
