Constant BODs due to usb driver

RAID controllers are for multiple hard drives in one machine, so if it is a laptop, it is probably safe. You would also know if you had a RAID configuration as you would have had to set it up or specially order it to arrive set up for you.

If you want to know for sure:
1. Click Start Menu
2. Right Click My Computer/Computer
3. Click Manage
4. Click Device Manager from the left pane
5. Expand the Disk Drives
6. Check to see if any RAID manufacturers or VIRTUAL DISK SCSI Disk Device are shown as these would indicate RAID controlled drives (typically, the hard drive manufacturer is shown such as Seagate, Western Digital, Toshiba, etc. if it is not RAID)

If you need help determining if it is a RAID drive, just ask in this thread and one of us will either know or be able to find the answer for you.

Thanks for the explanation - I expanded the disk drives and it just listed Hitachi HT and a bunch of numbers. Doesn't look like RAID from your description.

I've had several more BSODs this afternoon after all the fixes that were suggested.

Dumb question - could IE 9 have anything to do with it? Once I reinstalled Win 7, I upgraded to to IE 9. I can't say for sure the crashes started to happen around then, but the timing seems about right. I can't imagine that IE 9 could cause so much havoc, but nothing surprises me anymore.

Yeah, Hitachi is a typical hard drive manufacturer, as well. You could run the CMOS reset (steps 1-2 in the above outline) and see if it helps.

If you are wondering if it is IE9, see How do I install or uninstall Internet Explorer 9? for how to uninstall IE9. You may want to download the appropriate version of Download Internet Explorer 8 - Microsoft Windows before uninstalling IE9 in case it does not automatically revert back to IE8 as it should.

Santa didn't bring me a new laptop, so I'm stuck with this one.

I wanted to uninstall IE9 to see if that was causing the problems. However, when I go to ControlPanel/programs and look at the list of programs loaded on the computer, it's not there. I've looked at the list a hundred times. I had someone else look at it. Can't find it.

How does one uninstall a program that isn't listed? And is this normal?

Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Uninstall a program -> View installed updates (see left pane as highlighted in image 1) -> Type into the search box (see highlighted region of image 2) "Windows Internet Explorer 9" (without quotes) -> Click on Windows Internet Explorer 9 -> Click Uninstall (see highlighted region of image 3)

Thank you - I swear I'm really not that dumb in real life. I guess I've never tried to uninstall IE before and just assumed it would be on the list with all the other programs.

I will uninstall and see how it goes.

Yes, I did but I had to download it for Vista as they didn't have a link for IE 8 for Win 7. I figured Vista was the closest or did I get that wrong?

That should be fine. Windows 7 isn't listed because it comes pre-installed on 7. More than likely, uninstalling IE9 will just result in rolling back to IE8 and you won't have to make any changes or install IE8. I just recommended downloading the install file as a precautionary measure.

Unistalled the IE9 update and got a blue screen within the hour. I then went into the BIOS and cleared the CMOS memory. Just got another blue screen about 2 hours later.

So I think I might be at the end of the road. I don't want to, but am willing to reinstall Win 7 in case that is causing the problem.

Any other things to try before that?

When you say you are willing to re-install, do you mean Clean Install Windows 7 or Repair Install. I would recommend trying Repair Install first. If that does not fix the issue, then Clean Install Windows 7

Backup any important user files first in case something goes wrong with either step.
