New Build Random BSOD and now SMART Extended Error

Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to read this and I apologise in advance if it gets a bit wordy.

I decided to build myself a new computer that, once built, would last me a while without having to worry about it. FAIL

I have used,

i7 2600k
4x4GB Corsair Vengeance 16000
Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3P (bios f6)
Corsair TX 850w V2 PSU
Asus GTX 560 Graphics Card
Antec Kuhler 620 CPU cooler (seemed like a good idea)
OCZ Agility 3 60GB SSD (Boot Drive) + WD Caviar 680GB HDD
Coolermaster Scout Case
Generic SATA Optical Drive

When it all went together it started and installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 no problem but would occasionally just freeze up, I couldn't get any response from anything I tried.

This I could live with (annoying but teething problems I hoped), Then I got the occasional BSOD (mostly Page Fault in a Non Paged Area).

After some google'ing I set the SSD to AHCI (i forget why, but it seemed to be the thing to do) and reinstalled the OS, Still getting strange lock ups and odd BSOD's, but this time it will sometimes get to the 'Starting Windows' stage (just before the four coloured dots swirl) and stop, without progressing.

I attempted to re-install the OS with a different disc and subsequently the original and it has failed at various point with 'cant find this file' and 'this file is not where it should be' and once returning to the drive select to try again, the SSD isn't on the list again until it's rebooted.

I have now borrowed and run PC Check 7.05 and it passed everything except the SMART Extended test for the SSD, which shows 'Error', not 'Failed'. This being a new drive I guess it could be faulty but before I start an RMA, I would like to check if it's something I am or am not doing that's the fault.

I have spent so much time and money on this computer and, possibly due to it being mine, I am frustrated and can't think where I'm going wrong. any help or advice would be appreciated.

I have uploaded the minidumps I had the foresight to back-up (during the second installation) in the hope they will be beneficial.

I use PCCheck at work, and I find that you have to take it's results with a grain of salt.
SSD's are new technology, and there's just not many tests (if any) available for them.
That being said, here's the info that I've gathered on SSD's:

There's not a whole bunch available to test SSD's. The "easiest" test is to remove the SSD, install a platter-based hard drive, install Windows and test for stability that way.

Here's some suggestions:
- Update the SSD's firmware to the latest available version
- Slow the memory (RAM) down to the next slower speed (I've only seen one person who claimed that this worked for them).
- Use any manufacturer's utilities that you may have. If you don't have any, then try this free one (I haven't used it myself): Crystal Dew World
- Update chipset and storage controller drivers to the latest available from the manufacturer of the device (not the manufacturer of the motherboard). Be sure to update ALL controllers on the motherboard.
....NOTE: Recently (Nov 2011) we had BSOD issues with the Marvell 91xx controller and an SSD. You may have to switch controllers also.-
Replace the SSD with a platter based hard drive and see if that stops the BSOD's. If it does, then it's likely that there's a problem with the SSD OR an incompatibility with your system.
It's my opinion that SSD's aren't reliable enough (with current hardware) to be used on a system that needs to work reliably. Until I see reliability I will not recommend, nor will I use, SSD's for critical applications.

I have tried to re-attach the .dmp files but I'm told they are 'Invalid Files'

How do I a, upload them or b, open them so I can paste the contents?

The BSOD errors look like hardware, compatibility, low-level driver, or malware
Please provide the info above.
Also, see if you're able to install Win7 on a platter based hard drive to test if it's the SSD.

Thanks for all your help.

I've spent so long trying to get the computer working I didn't even think it could be the SSD causing me problems.

I've installed the OS on what was going to be my backup partition on the HDD and it installed flawlessly and has no issues at all.

I have tried to run programs that have been running in the past when I received a blue screens and they no longer cause me problems, even if I run most of the installed programs at once.

I don't know what to do with the SSD now though, it doesn't seem faulty but it obviously doesn't like being the primary boot drive and now it's just sitting there, lol. Hey ho, lesson learned.

SSD issues are (IME) primarily:
- SSD firmware (update it)
- drive controllers on the motherboard (update them)

When updating the drive controllers, you must update them from the drive controller manufacturer's website - NOT from the mobo manufacturer's website (the lag between the 2 is sometimes enormous).

Still no guarantee's from doing this, but it does improve the odds a bit.

Hi again,

Just thought i'd post a small update,

After installing the OS on a partition of my HDD it was nice just being able to use my new computer. Once i was happy that all was working again I wanted to update the firmware for the SSD and then the drive controllers on the mobo, before i could do that i found the drive wasn't being detected. I found it in Disk managment and made it a (i believe) 'simple volume'(?) and it showed up. To see if it was working i tried to copy a file to it and almost before it began i was informed the drive was no longer accessable/cannot be found (or words to that effect) and after a reboot it wasn't showing at all.

On a side note, i removed the drive this morning to try to send it back to eBuyer and the computer will no longer boot, the 'please insert you windows disc and attempt a repair' screen came up i think the error code was 0xc000000e.

Never a dull moment huh.

You're going to have to run Startup Repair at least 3 times from your installation media.

Hi,

I just wanted to update, I received the replacement SSD and fitted it, set sata 3 as AHCI and installed windows, once installed i connected the other drives and booted up.

Windows now works and everything appears to run smoothly and flawlessly.

Oddly now it works I'm not entirely sure what to do with it to make the most of it's potential. My goal of not needing to upgrade for a few years shouldn't be a problem tho.

Thanks for your help. I was beginning to get a little stressed with it as they were all new components and I didn't know what was wrong.
