Windows 7: Crashes, freezes and the occasional bsod.

Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit
Crashes, freezes and the occasional bsod.

Hi everyone,
I've got a three year old toshiba laptop running win7 home premium 32bit which isn't particularly great, but it has served its purpose. Any way, Yesterday the laptop froze, upon start up it froze again before I was able to open any programs. I've restarted it possibly twenty times with several different results. Several freezes after thirty seconds, several froze before I'd entered my password, three bsod's which I didn't note, but I had noticed that "physical memory" was mentioned.
I know there isn't much to go on based on that, but I've not got any more information to go on. I've attempted to reinstall win7, but the computer freezes long before I can start the install process. Also, for some reason I don't have any restore points for when I try to system restore.

Any help you can provide would be fantastic, I need this back up and running asap.

Thanks in advance.

To rule out physical memory, burn memtest64 on a cd using another pc. Run at least 7 passes to make sure memory is not the problem. We can go from there ...

If it mentioned "physical memory" then open the laptop and take out one of the RAM cards, see if it will boot.
That is assuming you have two RAM cards.
If it still doesn't boot, put the RAM card back in and take out the other one, try to boot.

Let us know if this worked.

Also, as Lemur suggested, download memtest86+ and put it on a CD/DVD or USB memory stick.
Boot to it and run it for at least 7 full passes.
This tests without your Windows OS running, it will also tell us if it's RAM - other hardware or the OS that is causing the crashes.
RAM - Test with Memtest86+

Intermittent freezes and occasional BSOD's over last 6 months
Here's what I've done over those 6 months: Updated all drivers, tested for overheating, re-installed windows 7 Pro over the top of prior install. Cleared out all ATI drivers and reinstalled. Tried everything I could think of. I am not sure how best to use the Dump files to solve the problem, but...
