It could be a result of either, though software is more common in cases where the system hangs and does not shut down unexpectedly. See if the above steps fix the problem before proceeding further. If you continue to have hangs, you can use the steps to Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup and determine if it is related to application conflicts.
Have done both the things you suggested and no freezing so far. so touch wood* it will have solved it but will keep you posted. thanks so far guys!
